Here's a question for you all on this hot sunny Friday:
Based on Chelsea's transfer dealings so far, compared to the top four finishers last season, What do you think of our chances this season?
Now we all know about Chelsea's transfer deals that have been completed so far as follows:
Chelsea:
In: Marko Marin (Werder Bremen, £7m) Eden Hazard (Lille, £32m), Marko Marin (Werder Bremen, £7m) Oscar (Internacional, £25m) Out: Didier Drogba (Shanghai Shenhua, free), Salomon Kalou (released), Jacob Mellis (Barnsley, free), Jose Bosingwa (released), Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid, loan)
So what of the teams that finished in the top four and above us last season and what they have done so far this summer? Here below (with thanks to the Daily Telegraph) is a list of what Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham have done:
Arsenal:
In: Olivier Giroud (Montpellier, £13m) Lukas Podoloski (Cologne, £11m) Santi Cazorla (Malaga, £16.5m) Out: Manuel Almunia (released), Gavin Hoyte (released), Jeffrey Monakana (Preston, free), Joel Campbell (Real Betis, loan), Denilson (Sao Paulo, loan) Benik Afobe (Bolton, loan)
Manchester City:
In: None Out: Owen Hargreaves (released), Gunnar Nielsen (released), Stuart Taylor (released), Wayne Bridge (Brighton, loan), Greg Cunningham (Bristol City, free)
Manchester United:
In: Nick Powell (Crewe, £4m) Shinji Kagawa (Dortmund, £17m) Out: Tomasz Kuszczak (Brighton, free), Michael Owen (released), Richie De Laet (Leicester, undisclosed), Matty James (Leicester, undisclosed), Fabio (QPR, loan) Park Ji-sung (QPR, undisclosed)
Newcastle:
In: Romain Amalfitano (Reims, free), Gael Bigirimana (Coventry, undisclosed) Out: Philip Airey (released), Ryan Donaldson (released), Danny Guthrie (released), Tamas Kadar (released), Peter Lovenkrands (released), Alan Smith (released), Leon Best (Blackburn, £3m), Fraser Forster (Celtic, £2m)
Tottenham:
In: Jan Vertonghen (Ajax, £10m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Hoffenheim, £8m) Out: Steven Pienaar (Everton, £4.5m) Vedran Corluka (Lokomotiv Moscow, £5m) Niko Kranjcar (Dynamo Kiev, £2m) Ryan Nelsen (QPR, free)
I guess the most surprising of all is Manchester City having signed no one. United have signed two players, one from the lower leagues and it's the opposite of what Chelsea have done.
Arsenal have made three impressive signings as it's very rare that you see them sign that amount of big names ahead of a new season.
Newcastle have a job on to hold onto their position above us and Tottenham will be something we just have to judge as the season goes on.
I think we the investments we have made, we should finish top four and should be pushing United and City for the title. Anything less will be disappointing as far as I am concerned.
The thing is, you have to earn the right to be contenders in this league and the the table at the end of the season doesn't lie.
Chelsea have taken bold strides so far in the summer and that could even continue right up to the end of the transfer deadline.
Will the likes of City and United spring into life before then? Only time will tell.
One thing is for sure, Chelsea have been by far the busier this summer and right now, are looking more than capable of challenging this season compared to last.
What do you think?
KTBFFH!
