Two players have suffered at Chelsea since AVB was sacked for one reason or another and they are Oriol Romeu and Daniel Sturridge.
Both lost their places in the team Sturridge had to settle for a place on the bench under the stewardship of RDM.
However, for Oriol Romeu the situation appeared to be very different. After recovering from an injury, Romeu featured on the bench or in the stands which was tough on him really after the start he had made here at Chelsea.
No one could question at the time the team selections made by RDM after he took charge, after all he lead us to FA Cup and Champions League glory but now the new season is upon us, you have to wonder if Romeu would get a chance this time?
Looking at Mikel for example, once he returned to the side under RDM he was a revelation and played a huge part in our success. In my eyes, he was outstanding.
The problem is, he had a real shocker against City and gave the ball away more times in that one game than he did the whole of the run in at the end of last season.
Raul Meireles seems to be being used as bait by the club in negotiations with Napoli over Cavani so I can't see him featuring too much by RDM before the window closes and Frank Lampard (right or wrong) will command a start in one of the two deeper positions in the 4-2-3-1 formation.
So the question we have to ask is what does the future hold this for Romeu?
For me his performances last term gave Mikel a kick up the arse and showed him how to play in the deeper position with the ball at his feet. Moving the ball and making use of possession quickly, it changed the focus from defence to attack and started off our counter attacks.
Before then, Mikel had been accused of slowing the game down too much which at times was warranted in my view.
I don't think there is any doubt that RDM prefers Mikel's defensive attributes in that position over Romeu but surely there must come a time when RDM needs to give Romeu a chance to prove his worth again.
It was very noticeable that after we got the fantastic 2-2 at the Nou Camp that took us to the Champions League final, amongst all the celebrations, Romeu appeared on the pitch wearing his Chelsea suit as he had been in the stands and not involved. RDM made a point of going over, putting his arm around him and speaking to him while this was all going on.
I just wonder if we are going to see Romeu occupy the bench more often than not this season and if that's the case, if a return to Barcelona would come around alot quicker than we all anticipated half way through last season.
What do you think?
KTBFFH!
I think he should play instead of mikel.as u hav said mikel slows down the game and if we are to achieve the kind of football that we want to play of quick and free flowing passing then he is the man to do that.and if played together with oscar that will easily be achievable.RDM should surely give him a chance to showcase his talents
ReplyDeleteI agree with his ability to pass the ball but what would we do defensively? Playing Oscar and Romeu in the back two we would be left very exposed at the back
ReplyDeleteHe is naturaly a defensive midfielder so i believe he can do that job jst adequately bt he has an added attribute of having an eye for a pass so playing him will definately an added advantage to us.he can be our sergio busquets if u get wat i mean
DeleteI tink u 2mst b loosin it up stairz hw can u suggest mikel b left out? Y cant we sit lampard out he is old n out of shape..only in chelsea old men r gvn high value ova d young...let RDM try mikel n romeou n c hw gud we wil play
ReplyDeleteRomeu should be in the 1st 11, as someone has said like busqets, he may not be spectacular in a last ditch tackle but his technical ability helps him read a game, read a pass, intercept a pass thats more valuable than de jong type player. He can play alongside Mikel in deep lying playmaker, dictate the tempo.
ReplyDeleteRdm should give him a chance.remember he is a barca prodigy he will come good in keeping the ball and good passing.up bluez
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering the same thing myself. Let's be honest mikel looked pretty bad against man city. Ill give him the benefit of the doubt that they only had 10 min during a good portion of the game but still. He completely slows down the game and messes up any flow getting the ball forward.
ReplyDeleteI liked what I saw from romeu last season. He got the ball forward and was decent on defense. We spent all that money upgrading our midfield so I think we should put romeu in so we can get the ball to hazard and mata so that they can make plays and hopefully produce goals.
