Now if you are a regular reader of my blog (thank you) then you will know I have talked about our new signings and RDM's possible "Super six!". If you aren't a regular on here (why not!?) then let me explain something to you.
Chelsea have been stuck with a way of playing ever since Jose Mourinho stumbled across a 4-3-3 formation at the beginning of his reign here when Didier Drogba was injured. Eidur Gudjohnssen was deployed through the middle with two wingers either side of him. That's pretty much been Chelsea since 2004.
Scolari tried to change it and failed, Ancelotti tried a diamond formation that also failed so reverted back to 4-3-3 and won the double. AVB came in and tried to fiddle with it and as we all know, that never worked either!.
Just as Jose Mourinho had done back in 2004, Roberto Di Matteo as part of AVB's backroom staff saw Chelsea switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation in the second half at Old Trafford when they were up against it, to try and get a foothold in the game and in turn, stumbled across a formation and way of playing that transformed his Chelsea vision. I called it at the time and suggested it was the way forward so could never understand why AVB wouldn't stick with it!.
Chelsea had to make do with the players we had in the squad last season to make it work as we saw Ramires and Bertrand play wide with Juan Mata in the middle and for the most part it worked as we won the Champions League and FA Cup.
This summer, Chelsea's spending indicates to me that RDM is looking to take the 4-2-3-1 one step further.
Speaking in America, RDM spoke of the new era at Chelsea with the new players coming in and those that have left us. He also gave us exactly what we had all been thinking with a confirmation of his intention for the new season. He said:
It's the "implement a few changes" comment that really excites me because for me, it's obvious!.
From what I can see, Chelsea will have their base in place. Cech in goal, the back four as normal and the two deeper lying midfielders who's role will be to protect the defence but to also supply forwards. This is where it now excites me!.
I predict Chelsea will give a free role to their midfield three and will give them all licence to roam around the pitch in behind Torres. Chelsea's game will be about movement with the ball and without in those forward positions and the likes of Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Marin and Ramires will all become a nightmare for opposition defenders to deal with.
Barcelona have set the standard of the way football should be played and everyone has been trying to come up with a similar way of playing, to be more entertaining, more creative and to play with attacking flair.
Potentially, Chelsea could have exactly that under RDM this season and if it works, will become a major force to contend with in both the Premier League AND Champions League this season.
It's early doors so we shouldn't get too carried away but with Robbie confirming he is trying to tweak a couple of things with our style, I can't wait to see us in action this season!.
KTBFFH!

“It’s a team that’s quite settled. It’s not new and there will not be radical changes overnight.
We are slowly trying to integrate the players we have signed over the summer. It’s important we continue our plan for this pre-season.
We are trying to implement a few changes in the way we play and we will work on these.”
