Following on from June we now move into July 2011 and our pre season begins. There are constant rumours flying around about potential signings, AVB keeps talking the talk and an injury blow hits us. Here we go!.
So the month started with AVB spouting off more about what he and his technical staff look to to achieve. If you read my last post about June, you will know I was well and truly sucked in by everything he was saying!. This continued as he stated that he could "find things in players' talent that they thought they didn't have".
Branislav Ivanovic was impressed with AVB after a couple of days training but then we suffered a blow with news of an injury once more to Michael Essien and had it confirmed he would be out for six months!.
Meanwhile, AVB again spoke to the media and focused on the expectations of the Chelsea supporters.
Pre season started with a win over Wycombe at Cobham and then a win at Fratton Park against Portsmouth.
With (as always), constant speculation about potential signings of Modric and Scott Parker, AVB was keen to point out that he wanted to use our pre season tour of Asia to have a good look at the players he already has here which in my view was the right thing to do.
John Terry was then keen to point out that although the majority of the players there had celebrated some great times before in their careers at Chelsea, last season was a disappointment and they want to focus on working hard for the new manager.
Meanwhile after winning their first game on tour against a Malaysian eleven, the media focus again turned to Fernando Torres. This time, AVB hit out at the media for turning Torres and his form into an obsession. I posted soon after that AVB had every right to be frustrated just weeks into his new job and I asked all Chelsea fans to judge Fernando Torres and his form when the season started and not in pre season!.
Chelsea's tour went well as we won games against Kitchee and the Thailand All Stars as it was clear to see that AVB had instructed the players to play a pressing style of football, high up the pitch similar to that of Barcelona. I posted about the change, liking the new way we had played but wondered if the new style would cut it in the Premier League.
July finished with quotes from pre season coming from Ivanovic, Mikel and Kalou.
So looking back it was an interesting month as our pre season took shape. We had good wins both at home and on tour and the noises coming out of the camp were positive. It was beginning to look like we could have a really good season despite doubts about our new pressing style of football!.
Stay tuned for August!
