After the big news yesterday, after winning the Champions League and FA Cup last season, it's now time to put everything behind us and focus on moving forward.
Without question this is a massive month ahead for the football club he prepares for the new season. We have made two signings as we know so far in Marko Marin and Eden Hazard and I just wonder if now Di Matteo is back from his holidays, the pursuit of Hulk intensifies and Chelsea get a deal done sooner rather than later. It's been very encouraging to hear from RDM that he has had involvement in the signings of both players so far.
Now after the amazing achievement of last season, questions will remain over the evolution of our Chelsea squad. I haven't read the press this morning but I can imagine someone, somewhere is asking just how Di Matteo will handle getting rid of players.
I wrote an article the other week about our squad and the new era at Chelsea and I am so pleased that Di Matteo will be at the helm to oversee things. You see, Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board have been rebuilding our squad with younger players for the past few seasons.
Just look at our squad now, Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Betrand, Romeu, Mikel, Ramires, Mata, Hazard, Marin, Piazon, Torres, Sturridge and Lukaku. All players with the best years ahead of them and Chelsea are looking good for the future already. If we can add Hulk to our ranks at the age of 25, it will be even better.
Playing next to the likes of Cech, Terry, Cole, Lampard and Essien and Meireles we still have a great blend of youth and experience and for me, we are all set for this season.
Of course, come July 1st we will have more of an idea of our squad after players contracts expire. We know Drogba is leaving and Kalou and Bosingwa's contracts are expiring so expect the two of them to leave but questions also remain over Florent Malouda. I expect the Frenchman to leave also.
With Chelsea having the possibility of winning seven trophies this season including the Charity Shield, we will need all of our squad this season.
The first few days of pre season are THE MOST important for Di Matteo this term as it was the first few days he took over from AVB. He needs to sit down with EVERY player and speak to them about his plans and where they fit in. He needs to make them feel valued and make clear their involvement this season. Players such as Danny Sturridge will want to hear better than they did last term.
People talk about Chelsea needing another striker to replace Drogba but I disagree. This season (as it stands at the moment) we have Torres as the main striker with Sturridge and Lukaku waiting in the wings. I believe that Di Matteo will use the latter much more this season with both getting their chance. Sturridge provides RDM with the option of pace through the middle and Lukaku with power.
I can't see RDM changing our formation this season either with 4-2-3-1 being the preferred option that has served us so well.
Chelsea have a great, young squad now coupled with experience in the right areas and have the potential to really push for the Premier League title this season.
Chelsea are looking good with the signings we have made so far added to the signings we have made in recent seasons and now with Di Matteo given the job full time, Chelsea ARE a side that WILL challenge for ALL honours this season!.
I can't wait for the season to start already!
