I think it's a question that people will be debating for a long time if I am honest. We all know there is pressure in football, every single club has a degree of pressure on them whether it's to challenge for honours, to finish in the top half of the table or to avoid relegation. I honestly believe that the pressures of success in the Premier League has affected the youngsters coming through.
Especially at Chelsea, there is always plenty of debate about our youngsters. Some have been given the chance, some have been farmed off out on loan season after season and some have taken the decision of leaving us to continue their careers in the game elsewhere.
We all know how well Scott Sinclair has done at Swansea, we will see Jack Cork as part of the Southampton squad this season, Miroslav Stoch has had a good season or two in Turkey and has just been rewarded with a new contract.
Then we have Josh McEachran. The guy has some much talent it's scary and for a period of time under Carlo Ancelotti, he broke into the team and was getting some football here. Last season it was a different story and he ended up moving to Swansea on loan after Brendan Rogers promised him football and we saw that he hardly played.
So let's look at back at Carlo Ancelotti's second season here after we won the double. Big, big players left the club and Carlo was told to bring some youngsters into the first team squad to replace them. The likes of Bruma, Van Aanholt and McEachran came into the squad.
The problem was, as soon as results started to go against us and players were unavailable either through suspension or injury, the youngsters had to step up and unfortunately the results never improved with it all coming to a head at home to Sunderland as we lost at home.
After that period, Chelsea were up against it and had to stick the youngsters on the bench and focus on playing the strongest eleven week in week out to climb back up the table. We all know what happened to Carlo don't we.
The one person that has involved some of the youngsters has been Roberto Di Matteo. Who on earth would have thought that Ryan Bertrand would be handed start on the left wing ahead of Florent Malouda? He also made a point of including some of them on the Champions League final squad.
The problem any manager has at Chelsea is the level of expectation. Top four HAS TO BE achieved without fail but you are expected to challenge for EVERY competition you take part in also!.
Without question, Chelsea have some very good youngsters coming through and hopefully they will get more of a chance this season at Chelsea. If things are going well in the League then you can see them taking part in the League Cup and maybe involved against the lesser sides in the Premier League.
The problem Di Matteo will have is if things aren't going so well. The pressure will be on him for Chelsea to win games week in, week out and that's when he won't have a choice but to play his strongest side available.
That's just football these days though isn't it. With the amount of money in the game and especially when this new £3 billion Sky Deal comes into play, there will be even more pressure on clubs and managers.
Being self sufficient is the way forward for the Premier League and may give the sides who look to avoid relegation and to finish in the top half of the table more of a chance to bring younger players through.
As for the clubs fighting to finish in the European places and top four especially, with the financial rewards on offer, will our youngsters really ever get enough chances to make it or would we have to continue to purchase young talent to come straight into the squad instead?
Are we ever going to see youngsters come through and make it at Chelsea?

Pls chelsea need to giv dis young players chance to prove der worth at list 2games in a month or most tym start dis young boys in sum games dats less presure or even start dis young bois in only home matches for dem to get more expossed coch take note
ReplyDeleteI believe that if the Senior players are playing well and killing games off, we will get to see the younsters. It would be so easy for Di Matteo to put Josh McEachran or Lucas Piazon into the game if we are 3 goals up. Hopefully, we will see more of them.
