You can't blame us for getting ahead of ourselves or going over the top in recent weeks could you?. Beating Spurs at Wembley 5-1, Beating Barcelona over two legs with as you know, the second coming from TWO GOALS DOWN with just TEN MEN and then beating QPR 6-1 last weekend, it would be impossible for anyone to not get carried away!.
I bet there are people reading this, who have well and truly annoyed someone in their lives or at work at some stage over the past week or two by going on about "how great we are", "how we will win everything" and "how we will finish fourth - no problem!".
I am as guilty as the next person for doing it and last night was the smack in the face and kick up the arse that we all needed!.
I am not being arrogant at all here, I am just trying to explain the feeling I've had in recent weeks, hoping that you can relate to it.
This may sound strange but last night could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for a whole host of reasons. Yes I did just say that!.
Let's look at our situation before the game kicked off. We were a point behind Newcastle and Spurs with all three of us fighting for fourth place. Realistically, all we could have done is try to win our remaining three games with the hope that Spurs would slip up. We have always been reliant on them and their results. It's always been out of our hands even if we won all three games.
Now we have lost to Newcastle their still is a slim chance that we could still finish fourth but again, we would need both of them to lose their last two games with Chelsea getting maximum points from Liverpool away and Blackburn at home.
The only thing we do have control over is the Champions League final. It's in our hands to go out there on the 19th and win it. That's a big difference.
We haven't deserved to be in the top four over the course of the season though have we?. Where we find ourselves is about right and come the end of the season we can have no complaints.
The good thing is we have the opportunity to win two massive cup finals including the one we have always wanted and especially since Moscow.
Last night would have been a harsh reminder in that dressing room and in the stands, that despite our heroics and great performances - they are in the past. They have got us to where we are in both competitions, but are finished with and we need to refocus before it's too late.
It would be easy to think that because Liverpool have been struggling this season and after our performance of late, that we would beat them without question.
If we hadn't of had last night's result, we could have turned up on Saturday speaking of confidence being high and thought that we would just have to turn up to win it.
Instead, we are left with a reminder that in this game, you have to earn the right to win games and especially in the big games, earn the right to win trophies.
Football has a funny way of giving you a feeling of jubilation and achievement in one game and then take you to the complete opposite in the next. That's why we love it so much I guess.
So we wake up this morning after being brought back down to earth with a bump and the training ground in Cobham will be an interesting place to be.
Robbie and his players have to talk last night through to get it out of our system, re-establish focus and work hard to prepare for Liverpool which by the way, is no easy game on any day let alone the FA CUP Final.
Let's hope we have learnt the lessons from last night and see the very different, very focused and determined Chelsea side we have enjoyed watching over the last three weeks!.
