I have written a post that went out a few hours ago stating that last night was the kick up the arse that Chelsea needed ahead of two big cup finals coming up because being honest, and I am sure I am not the only Chelsea fan in doing so, I got a little bit ahead of myself with our recent success in big games.
Now I am not interested in negativity towards Roberto Di Matteo at all and I am not posting this to encourage it. Let me get that straight here and now. I am 100% behind him and I hope he is given the chance to take over on a full time basis as our manager.
However, last night would have been a wake up call for Robbie in relation to when to rotate, rest players and when not to.
I fully understand why he made the selection he did to start the game and if we had won, none of us would have brought that into question. The problem is, we lost and there will be fans out there asking questions. No doubt the media and press will focus on the fact that Roman Abramovich was sitting there in his box watching and didn't look impressed like the rest of us.
Up to this point, RDM has managed to rotate with success to a degree. In saying that, we have still dropped points at home to Spurs, away to Arsenal and Fulham and all three at home last night.
From the outside, we look at professional footballers with envy and jealousy because of the lifestyle they have and the wealth that's in the game these days.
On the other hand, we also look at the fact that they only train for two to three hours a day and then play for ninety minutes once, maybe twice a week. To me, that would seem to be easy enough.
This is where questions will be asked of why we are rotating players and after looking like missing out on finishing inside the top four, they will need answering.
I think now more than ever, RDM will realise that from here on in, he must play his strongest eleven / players on form. OK, we have the FA CUP Final on Saturday, Liverpool away during the week next week followed by our last game in two weekends time at home to Blackburn.
It will give the players a weeks rest after Blackburn to build up to the Champions League final on 19 May.
I am hoping that RDM feels the same as me now and will stick with the players who have played an important role in the big games over the last few weeks.
We need to finish on a high and the bump in the road last night should refocus everyone including Robbie, in doing that.
