After I posted earlier about being written off tomorrow night I wanted to follow up with a post about "The old guard" at Chelsea.
I wrote before the season started that this season would be a big season for the ageing members of the Chelsea squad. Players such as Drogba, Lampard, Cech, Terry etc and it has proven to be the case.
We all know what happened with AVB and how he tried to come in and make changes straight away rather than wait until the end of the season, and enough has been said about all that already. The thing is, Roberto Di Matteo has managed them all perfectly and we are enjoying the results in recent weeks. Think about it, when would you ever see a Chelsea side travel to the Emirates fighting for the top four WITHOUT Drogba and Lampard?
For the last two or three seasons now we have had the press and media declare our old guard as past it and to be sold on. They kept banging on about a new Chelsea and a season this season, to focus on the rebuild of the club.
That's going to happen of course but the old guard still have life left in them yet and in recent weeks, they have picked themselves up, fought for the club, for the shirt, the supporters and each other and proved just what we are made of.
At different stages of the season they had been written off one way or the other and it seemed as though their final season (if you believe the papers) that was heading down the pan, would be their last hurrah, their final swansong. However, look at their performances against Napoli, Spurs at Wembley in the FA CUP semi final and Barcelona at home last week. ALL OF THEM stood up and WERE counted and made a real difference.
For us Chelsea fans tomorrow night, we are looking at the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien to inspire everyone else. OK, some of them won't start the game but their influence and experience at times like these and in that dressing room before the game would be invaluable. It's because of these people and the experience of the side as a whole in these situations that I posted about us being written off and it being dangerous to do so.
The thing is, if Chelsea are defeated tomorrow, then the players can take great credit to get as far as they have based on the situation we were in after Napoli away. No doubt though, the press would have yet another pop at the old guard.
However, if Chelsea were to go through tomorrow night to the Champions League final, the second for a number of players who have been here since that horrible night in Moscow, it would be because of them.
After being talked of as being passed it, done for and to be cast off at the end of the season, could the "old guard" be about to guide Chelsea to the Champions League final AGAIN and stick two fingers up at all their critics?
I hope so!
