I have to say that the general opinion of Ron Gourlay amongst Chelsea fans isn't exactly "ideal" but he spoke yesterday after Chelsea beat Benfica and booked their place in the Champions League semi finals against Barcelona.
He spoke of the Barcelona game and was also keen to re-iterate that although Di Matteo has turned things round, there is still a way to go until the end of the season.
Of Barcelona he said:
"As far as fearing them goes, I wouldn't say there's any fear. There's the utmost respect of what Barcelona is and how they play their football but not fear. I imagine that respect would be mutual."
I agree with him totally. I think the whole football community respects Barcelona and the brand of football Pep Guardiola's side play but as I said yesterday, they know that they have a difficult two games against us. So I do believe that they respect Chelsea as much as we do them.
Moving on, Gourlay also said:
"I think finishing in the top four is the ultimate challenge for the club now, Everyone talks about the Champions League but to finish as high up as possible in the Premier League is very important.(Source BBC)
Everybody in the business knows the objectives of the football club. Everybody is very clear and buys into it.
The job is not done yet. The biggest danger is to get carried away. We need to give respect to Wigan and Fulham, the upcoming games, then the games after that.
We've set some high goals between now and the end of the season. We can't let external things get in the way.
Robbie has got our utmost support. Everybody is pulling in the right direction. We have an interim manager until the end of the season and some big games coming up.
Let's just get through these games and we'll see where that takes us at the end of the season."
Again for once, I agree with Gourlay. The club as a whole looks to be pulling in the same direction with compared to a month ago is fantastic. It's nice to hear him speak well of RDM too.
The focus remains on our priority and that IS the Premier League. We simply HAVE TO finish in the top four as the best chance of making it into the Champions League again.
We have often heard from RDM about how he is simply taking each game as it comes from game to game and that is how it should be. As Gourlay says, we need to give Wigan and Fulham the respect they both deserve this weekend and prepare for them as we would against Barcelona.
There is a massive six points up for grabs this weekend and that's our aim right now. Forget Barcelona and the game against Spurs next weekend, the league is our focus now.
