It was no surprise that Roberto Di Matteo's first move was to bring in Chelsea man Eddie Newton into the club to work alongside him. The two of them have had a good relationship since their playing days and have taken that into a great working relationship.
I think it's a smart move by Roman Abramovich to hand the reigns over to Di Matteo and again for Di Matteo to bring Eddie into the club. Both are Chelsea through and through, both had successful careers at the club and will have the respect of the players. Ignore all the rubbish going around stating otherwise.
Eddie Newton spoke to Chelsea TV yesterday:
He also said:
"The ambition is to get into fourth place and we will push as hard as possible. Every game is very important between now and the end of the season.
I can't talk about what has been done before, but I am Chelsea through and through and we want that drive and that will to win, and when we get that, it becomes a habit again"
As for Bobby Di Matteo he also spoke at length to Chelsea TV which will be featured below but he had a message for all the Chelsea fans:
Di Matteo also added:
'It has been a very difficult 24 hours for a lot of people at the football club, Andre has brought some very good, positive ideas and changes to this football club and we will benefit from his changes. I enjoyed very much working with him and we will remain friends for the rest of our lives, but I will have to move on for this club and try my best with the players we have here.
It was a good morning, We only just played Saturday so it was a short and sharp session. We need to re-group for sure. Today I have mostly spoken to the players individually to try to get them in the right frame of mind for the task ahead and that is our job now.
Our duty now is to look forward and to try to get the results that we need in the league, the Champions League and in the FA Cup to have a good season.'
It's an encouraging time for us with these two at helm for the remainder of the season. It would have been easy for Roman to bring someone else in that would maybe force Di Matteo to leave the club but he has put a lot of faith in him and also Eddie and I believe that is the right thing to do.
With any new appointment at a football club, you look for a reaction from the players. One thing that has been apparent of late is the fact that the players never really looked like they wanted to play for AVB and performances were and have been woeful.
Tonight's game is more interesting that ever as we look to see RDM's first team selection and formation.
Let's get behind the two of them and the players and give them every opportunity to turn our season round. Good luck to the both of them!.
