When AVB took over in the summer and revealed that he has been asked to take the club forward for the next three years it was clear that a complete revamp of our squad was needed. With that, it was to be expected that the press would have a field day linking the club with plenty of names and future signings along with continued stories of players leaving the club.
AVB tried to change things too quickly and paid the ultimate price whereas RDM has come in and stuck with the old guard and the players have responded almost instantly. The thing is, a revamp of the squad IS still needed and will happen starting this summer.
It seems that even before the season finishes, it appears to be silly season already with the press with reports of all sorts of money being banded about to sign numerous players. Like I said this is expected with Chelsea these days so it comes as no surprise.
However, one story that has appeared this morning leaves me questioning the substance in it. Like I said it's more than likely just a rumour and nothing more but if it were to be true, it could signal the start of yet another major spending spree from Roman Abramovich as HE looks to take the club forward.
The report I am referring to is this one that has appeared in The Telegraph this morning. The report states that Chelsea are preparing a bid of around £84m to bring Cristiano Ronaldo (27) and Gonzalo Higuain (24) to Stamford Bridge this summer.
It's an amazing amount of money but that's what it's going to take to bring these players into the club. We all know that Higuain has struggled to hold down a regular start at Madrid due to the form of Benzema and that Ronaldo has had a strained relationship with the Madrid fans after he had been slated for his performance against Barcelona.
To be honest, I really can't see these two deals happening at the moment. If Madrid win the League and Champions League then maybe there will be a good chance along with a certain Mr Mourinho coming with them. If not the Champions League, then I think they will stay there.
The thing is, people will read this and immediately think to themselves "Why would they want to leave Real Madrid?" and they would be right in thinking so. However, all things come to an end and if these mega money deals are put on the table with he challenge of being part of Roman's revolution added to them, I just wonder if the idea of coming here will be appealing?.
One thing is clear, Roman WILL BE spending again to invest in a new generation of Chelsea to keep up with the likes of Man City now. It will all depend on whoever comes in this summer and what they can negotiate with Abramovich in relation to control of transfers.
If Roman can pull off the deal most of us want to bring Jose back, I wouldn't put it past the both of them to convince BOTH Ronaldo and Higuain to follow them to the Bridge!.
