As you can imagine there were plenty of questions asked of AVB after a week of intense speculation at the club. The situation between AVB and Frank Lampard was always going to come to question after Lampard, fresh from being named Captain as he returned to the starting line up against Bolton AND scoring, described there relationship as "not ideal".
When asked about those comments, AVB said:
"It's just a manager-player relationship in the end, Frank's words are genuine. They are genuine from a player that has a reflection of a relationship between us. For me, it's fine, I have no problems with it.(Source)
I have to choose the team and I try to choose the best team for every single game. It hasn't involved Frank a couple of times but it doesn't mean I have a personal problem with him. His own interpretation of the relationship is his own but I have no problem with it and I explained it to him. They are decisions I have to take for the benefit of the team, always."
First of all, credit to AVB for speaking openly about the situation. He could put up "a front" on all this but he chose to answer the way he did without avoiding the issue.
But, saying that I think he is missing the point. Now I know people have a divided opinion of Frank Lampard right now. Some people would at this point in time, rather focus on the future of our club and play someone like Lucas Piazon. People knock Frank but like I said everyone is entitled to their opinions.
What I will say is that my opinion is based on Chelsea's IMMEDIATE future. We have to put the situation with youngsters to one side now because of where we are in the league and it's as simple as that. Nothing else should be considered until we can confirm our top four finish.
It's all well and good blooding youngsters but if we had no Champions League football next season it would be a total disaster what with the new financial fair play rules coming in.
So with this being considered and getting back to my argument that AVB is missing the point, Frank Lampard has to be playing now. When AVB picks sides that doesn't include Lampard and plays someone like Meireles or Mikel, we lose Frank's attacking qualities. You cannot take away someone with the goal scoring ability from midfield that Lampard has when you need goals to win games, to get you three points and to put you back up that table!.
AVB said that he chooses the best team for every game. Look at where we are in the league for god sake!. His "selections" haven't worked for the most part have they. I spoke before Bolton last week and insisted that AVB had to play the strongest eleven we have now at the club and forget form. We needed players that have been there and done that and will give us the best chance to get back in the top four.
The wrote my starting eleven that morning and thank god AVB went with the exact same players. I expect the same starting line up again this afternoon and if there isn't, questions need to be asked.
Frank Lampard (bearing in mind our league position) has to play week in, week out.

His ability to score isn't in question. He slows down the play and his mobility and defending are just not good enough against the top teams anymore. You'll notice he mainly plays against weaker opposition under AVB. And to be honest I'm not thrilled that Frank has been talking about this to the media. If he was putting the club first he'd say nothing. By talking he's putting team frank first.
