AVB spoke last Thursday to a radio station in Portugal with plenty of it being featured in the press in the last 24 hours. In an hour long interview AVB was asked to describe where Chelsea are now and he said:
"We are now in the exact same moment as last year"I think we are worse now than when we were last year. Yes we are out of the title race, Yes just like under Ancelotti we now have to face the reality of missing out on the top four and our Champions League existence but we never had all this disarray in our dressing room did we?. For me this makes this season much worse than where we were last year.
AVB has spoken about maximising the potential of the players and to fine tune them all to come together as a collective to try and achieve success. I ask you the question:
Do you think he has done that? For me it's clear to see he hasn't and we are in a much worse position for it. Beaten by United away and then throwing a three goal lead away at home, getting stuffed by Arsenal at home and losing twice at home to Liverpool doesn't tell me we are in the same position as last year.
It's the situation with the players when the manager spoke of not everybody being behind him and his ideas that is the biggest problem. Frank Lampard confirmed it after the game at the weekend and explained his relationship with the manager is "not ideal". Lampard isn't the only one either with reports of Cole and Essien also falling out with AVB.
We keep hearing the club is bigger than anyone from the manager AND the players but when that club has fractions inside it, there will be ongoing problems that will affect the club in the long term. If we miss out on Champions League football at the end of the season who does it affect the most? The answer is the club of course. The manager might leave and some of those players but it's the club that is left to deal with the situation as it's the one directly affected by all this.
As a result from all that has been and still is going on with Chelsea it comes as no surprise that AVB is now looking over his shoulder after admitting publicly for the first time that he is unsure what Roman will do.
We have heard AVB stand firm and insist as he responds to every single question being asked of his future in the past few weeks that he "has full support of the owner".
Now it seems that full support seems to be wavering as he said following on from his earlier quote:
“It is an exact copy, but with a less experienced coach. I know that, in the Abramovich era, we have the worst results but I think I have felt the confidence from the owner. Let’s see if he wants a change in the club or not.
The pattern of behaviour of the owner has led to a downfall of managers in similar situations, or even ‘better’ situations. What will be his reaction? It will be one of two: either a continuation of the project and full support from above; or a continuation of the cultural pattern that has happened before.
We don’t know. We don’t know if it’ll be tomorrow or in two years from now. It’ll depend upon what is your understanding of what is happening at the moment.”
I keep saying it so sorry to regular readers in repeating myself but I AM surprised that AVB is still here (more on that later) but it did seem as though Roman was prepared to stand firm and back the man he invested heavily in to rejuvenate and rebuild HIS Chelsea.
Maybe after Napoli and everything that was reported as going on there has been the final straw as Roman looks to secure Chelsea future in the top four.
If AVB has had to think of his performance as manager and has openly admitted he has made NO PROGRESS this season then you can bet your life Roman Abramovich has done exactly the same.
Will Roman act sooner rather than later or will he continue to stick by his man? Only time will tell. For now if you asked me, I think we are far worse than last season and that can only lead to one thing!.
