I said in my preview that all we wanted primarily was three points today and we got exactly that today but it wasn't easy. We had the game won, then threw it away but picked ourselves up and scored again and then relied on Petr Cech to push a close range header over the bar to ensure we got a great and important three points.
It was a hard game against a spirited Wolves side who we knew wouldn't give up. Wolves had their chances in the first half with two close range free headers, one of the post and the other headed wide and should have done better with both.
Chelsea had chances too with notably, Ramires shooting straight at the keeper and but for last minute defending could have been a goal up at the break.
Watching the game it seemed to me that it looked like the Chelsea of recent weeks, creating chances or half chances and not taking them. Imagine how many games we could have won if all it took was for us to take most the chances we create?. Chelsea could have, but never took them in the first half and at the break we went in 0-0.
Our performance in the second half was much better. Everyone put the effort in, dominating possession and forcing Wolves backwards. Fernando Torres had a good game up front, kept working hard and forced the corner that led to our first goal from Ramires. As the corner came over, the ball found it's way to Ramires and under pressure from a defender, turned as the ball squirmed out from their feet and smacked the ball into the top corner from 12 yards to make it 1-0.
Mata came off for McEachran and fresh legs as Chelsea continued to dominate the ball. However, Fletcher came of for Wolves and gave Chelsea a different problem up front to deal with. It was Fletchers header across goal from a deep cross that led to Wolves scoring their equaliser as the ball found it's way to Ward who drilled the ball hard and low into the net from 12 yards.
I couldn't believe it, it seemed that we had thrown it all away again but Chelsea had different ideas. Chelsea pressed forward again and got their reward. Frank Lampard picked the ball up outside the box and played the ball square to Torres who looked up, and slid a pass between two defenders and played in Ashley Cole. Cole first time, drilled the ball across goal and there was Frank Lampard to volley the ball into the empty net from 6 yards to make it 2-1 Chelsea!.
Just when we thought we could hold on, right at the death another ball into the box was flicked on at the near post and was headed goal wards from 8 yards out only for Petr Cech to tip the ball over the bar!. With that, the Referee blew his whistle to end the game.
It was a fantastic three points considering recent results. Yes we can make a big deal out of player performances, the fact that Wolves had three free headers in and around goal but who cares right now, they never went in.
The big thing from today is obviously the three points but in addition to that it was the public display of support for the manager and finally, the fact that Chelsea never gave up after Wolves scored their goal and went up the other end and won it!. In light of recent events, today was massive!.
