Frank Lampard speaking to Chelsea TV after the Sunderland game was keen to point out that although the win was important, we should be finishing off games rather than allow the nerves to kick in. It's been something that has been our achilles heel this season without question.
Lampard said:
"We have to fight our way through that [the nerves at the end of the game]. We need to be better at finishing off games – even at 1-0 you need to have that confidence you’re going to keep a clean sheet and I think the whole stadium felt nervous last 20 minutes which is understandable but having got that result I think we need to kick on.(Source)
We hadn’t won at home since Man City so we need to push on and I think our first-half form was sharper than it has been at home. We moved the ball about a lot quicker from side-to-side, we found spaces and we need to keep doing that.
You do [need 1-0 wins]. First half I think it was a game we could have gone on an won much more comfortably – second half a little bit more the opposite last half an hour. Nerves kicked in a little bit and we hung on in there in the end.
It was a great strike by Fernando at the back post and I was just lingering and I tried to react and luckily enough it hit me somewhere and went back in so I was just delighted to see it go in really.
You’ve got to be in it to win it. My dad used to tell me years ago ‘get in the box and it will fall to you’, and it did."
Lampard is spot on and like I said, it's something that has really affected us this season. We have lost so many points for silly defensive errors in games which we all are aware of but at the same time we have created so many opportunities to score and we haven't taken them.
With the way we play, we are always going to create chances. Now whether it's because players are greedy or selfish in certain situations I don't know, but the simple fact remains that we only have ourselves to blame for points dropped.
It's a team game although I do understand people wanting to score goals to keep their places in the side but saying that, players need to be aware of the players in better positions than themselves in or around the box and to play them in. How many times have we seen Torres shaking his head in frustration at his run being ignored!.
We have to start taking our chances between now and the end of the season if we are to have any hope of silverware at the end of the season. We need to be taking three points week in, week out now as we can't afford to drop more points.
Teams are there to be killed off so it's about time we started doing it!.
