With news that Chelsea are looking at a deal for a new right back and rumours that the Gary Cahill deal will be done and dusted by tomorrow, I am just wondering if AVB will revert back to his approach of playing with a high defensive line?.
We have seen that he tried to implement his "high", "medium" and "low" block approach during the beginning of the season and Chelsea suffered badly with heavy defeats away at United and then at home to Arsenal.
Chelsea players looked out of their depth at times and uncomfortable and eventually a change was made with the players taking a couple of steps deeper and we have looked better ever since. OK, we still are leaking silly goals but compared to how we were defending it's better.
The question is and it's something I have been wondering on here for a while now, it's whether or not a team can adopt a high lined approach in the Premier League and if they can make it work?.
The Premier League is one of, if not the fastest league in the world and it's very different compared with La Liga in Spain ad Serie A in Italy. In those leagues the high line works because of the tempo of the game, over here it's very different.
In almost every single side in the Premier League, they have pacey players who can get in behind your back four or break against you on the counter attack. We seriously have to consider the strength of the league here and the teams in it now, anyone CAN beat anyone on their day and it says alot for all the teams here.
I guess the benchmark is Barcelona, but then again I wouldn't exactly say that they have the quickest back four on the planet would you?. As we all know, Barcelona's play is based on how they press the ball from the front men through their midfield with the idea of winning the ball in their opponents half so there back four never have to worry about balls being played in behind.
Barca are the masters of it and everyone else is trying to do their best to implement the same style. The problem is, as we have seen, with the game being so much quicker it's almost impossible to ask your forwards and midfielders to play the same way for 90 mins in the Premier League, you would never have the legs!
I just wonder if these two potential signings will be brought into the club to add pace to our back line on the basis that AVB see's the high defensive line as the way forward for our club?.
What do you people think? Could the high defensive line work over here it is it simply the case that it will never work?
