After Frank Lampard came on and scored the winner against Manchester City in the week, he was asked after the game about being on the bench the last couple of games. His response made headlines in the media and was spoken about on here. Lampard's response was of surprise as he said straight after the game:
"I want to play, simple as that, I'm as fit as I've ever been. I've been in a good run of form and now I've not been playing. I haven't spoken [to Villas-Boas] so I don't know [why], simple as that.As you can imagine with the way the media are with Chelsea at the moment, we have seen headlines such as "AVB GIVES FRANK THE COLD SHOULDER" and it seems they cannot be further from the truth.
Speaking today, AVB has spoken of the Lampard situation and has made it clear that everyone is pushing hard to get into the side including Lampard but to play every week is not possible. He said:
'Frank is not the only one, People are making great efforts to get into the Chelsea squad and Frank is one of the top five used players. Everyone wants to be involved in every game but sometimes it is not possible.(Source)
I treat everybody equally. It's pretty clear everybody wants to play in every single game. You will find it from Frank but you will find it from Malouda, Kalou and Paulo the same. Everybody wants to play and pushes to be involved.
There is no hiding that Lamps represents the best in history of the club. He and JT are near to 600 or 550 appearances, these are players of a massive magnitude for the cub and represent Chelsea's success, but in our opinion every player must be treated equally and we try to be as fair and coherent as possible. Sometimes we make decisions that cannot please everybody, because it's a 24-man squad. That is the reality of football and there are no explanations.
I have to say I agree with AVB. Frank also said after the game that he understands that at his age (33) he can't play every game but doesn't agree with it. We all know Lampard always wants to play and says he is fit so you can understand his frustrations.
However, we were on a poor run of form and struggling to get important points. We needed to do something and it turns out that AVB has chosen to stick with a more or less settled side and it has worked - Three important wins on the spin.
Lampard will get his chance again because you know that he will work hard to do so. I wouldn't be writing Frank Lampard off just yet as far as this season goes, but for now he has to support the manager because he has turned it round and we are getting things right!.
