I said before the Valencia game that we needed our big players to put in big performances and to stand up and be counted and lead the rest of the team to victory. They did exactly what we asked for and we got a fantastic result.
I said the same again for yesterday against City and although understated, they still all played a part in getting the right result.
However, just as important as your big players putting in big performances is our manager. How many times last season were we sitting there in games calling out for a tactical change to be made to change the game and it never happened. How many times do we see managers waiting to see out the first half to make changes only then and not before?
Last night AVB took another step forward in his tenure at our club in my eyes with his "performance" on the touchline.
Alot is made of AVB's antics during the game. The guy is passionate about his team performing the way he wants them to and when things go right the jubilation is there for all to see.
Last night watching the first twenty minutes and seeing just how impressive City had been and once again our high defensive line being exposed to concede a goal, he took the decision to change things at that moment. He could have waited till half time but who knows what would have happened if we had kept our high line till then. City could have scored two or three knowing just how shaky we are playing like that.
He didn't wait, made the tactical decision to change our defensive and midfield starting positions and it literally changed the game for us. As soon as we sat deeper, City struggled to break us down and we looked so much more comfortable.
Of course the players need to perform and make the right decisions on the pitch during the game but at the same time they need guidance from the manager. AVB gave them exactly that and a foundation to build on.
Well done AVB you made a big decision in a big, big game and it played a huge part in the win last night!.
