I am asking the question based on the article that has been featured in The Sun. The same question was put to AVB in his press conference ahead of tomorrow's clash with Liverpool. AVB responded by saying:
"Is he still worth that money? Would I pay £50m for him? Of course I would. At the moment Fernando's best moments in terms of scoring were the Liverpool days. That does not mean those days won't arrive at this club and that does not mean he is not performing for the team because he is.I am right with AVB, I stand by the £50m we paid for Torres and would pay it again today. We simply have to remember Fernando Torres wasn't the same player he used to be when we bought him because of the constant injury problems he was faced with.
Isolate the last four months with the goals he's scored. It's not bad. A striker is not just there to put the ball in the net. He's there to create. We create enough opportunities if we win or lose games. It's creation of opportunities.
At the moment, our best goalscorers are our two midfielders. For them to finish, someone is creating. The team is, so I'm happy at the moment.
He's one of the best assisters at the club. Four or five. He's assisting people and the team are getting wins. Sometimes we don't get all the wins we wanted but we get the opportunities for us to win games.
Fernando has picked up from last season. Not only with his form physically but also his movement for us."
Torres said it himself and stated on record that this past summer was the first time in five years that he had complete rest in the summer and it's done him the world of good.
As AVB says, if you isolate the last four months it's there for all to see, Torres is well on the way to getting back to his best, his movement is different class, he looks fit and hungry and will get on a run of goals that will put him back up there with the best.
Form is temporary and class is permanent. Torres at £50m was and still is a shrewd investment by Chelsea. He signed a five and a half year contract and you would think will remain here for the duration of that. Chelsea will not need to splash out mega money for the next five years in another big name forward as we already have Sturridge, Lukaku and hopefully by then, someone from the academy who is ready to fight for places.
So if you are asking me if paying £50 was the right thing to do back then or if I would again now, then I would bite your hand off to do so.
What do you think? Do you see Torres as an investment like I do or disagree?
