John Terry spoke to the press ahead of England's friendly with Sweden and has revealed he is feeling good, getting plenty of support from players and managers alike and always looks to two Chelsea Captains of the past as his inspiration.
We all know what allegations JT is facing at the moment and as a result he couldn't speak directly about the investigations being made by the FA and Police. However, he did say:
"The easy thing to do would have been to step away from it, But I am here, fronting it up and dealing with it today. Unfortunately I can't speak -- we all understand that with the police and the FA, I can't speak about things. But I'm here and I'm very proud to be England captain. I'm not someone to hide away.Terry then revealed he has received messages of support from the football community, players and managers alike and said:
I’m in a great state of mind, completely focused on playing well, and on training, So from my side of things nothing has changed at all. I’m participating in training and delighted to be captaining the side again, leading the team out.
When we warmed up [prior to kick-off against Spain] down the side I got a got a good reaction, and I clapped them, and I got a good reception back. So obviously I’m delighted with that, being captain of the side, and was very pleased walking away from that.
"I don't want to talk about people individually, But from across the world people and players and managers have been on the phone and been very supportive of me."Finally, Terry revealed that it's what he has learnt growing up around the likes of Dennis Wise and Marcel Desailly, that has helped him to "front up" to what's happening and not shy away from things. He said:
"It's just the way they were in and around the dressing room that impressed me. They were two big characters -- Wisey more so on the pitch and Marcel with how he dealt with things in the dressing room. He never took any crap, basically, and made sure everyone was on it.Credit where credit is due for the way he continues to handle himself. It can't be easy walking into a public arena while you have his situation hanging above his head. To put it to one side and carry on with your everyday footballing life has to be difficult but like he said, he learnt from two of the best.
(Wise) He had little bits throughout his career but regardless of what happened, on the training pitch he was always the best, always at the front of the running, making sure he pulled people up with him, getting people up alongside him from the middle of the pack. Seeing that as a young boy growing up was really good.
I look back at Wisey and Marcel and they made sure they were on it every single day and they made sure everyone was on it with them. I feel as though I've learned from them."
