DAVID LUIZ: AVB changes approach and backs his man!

Let's be honest when it comes to David Luiz everyone has their own opinion (including Gary Neville!). Some people say he should be playing week in, week out. Some people say he shouldn't. Some people think he should be playing at right back and some others believe he should be playing as a holding midfielder.

No matter what your opinion of him is, David Luiz is a talent without question. For me it's just trying to find exactly where he can most effective for Chelsea.

Luiz has come under scrutiny this season because of his "rash" defending and quite rightly so but only at times during games. OK, his rush of blood to the head against QPR cost us in the end but my god he did everything he could to try and put things right. We only had 9 men and he was still stepping in front of attackers, winning the ball and making barn-storming runs down the right and through the middle to try and create something..

People have again criticised his performance against Liverpool on Sunday but apart from one or two lapses in concentration, what else did he do wrong?. The first goal wasn't his fault as he was caught out wide as Mikel lost the ball. The second goal he was marking his man (Carroll) and couldn't do anything either.

The problem is, there is alot of good about David Luiz that no one focuses on. Of course mistakes will always be highlighted and discussed when you are losing games but when you win games they aren't.

The amount of times Luiz wins tackles, steps in front of an attacker to win the ball back and start our attacks going, looks to play people in or spread the play out wide is fantastic and again, hardly recognised. Think back to Sunday, what did Luis Suarez actually do in the game apart from play a one-two with Bellamy when Mikel was caught out? Luiz kept him quiet.

It's because of all the negativity that surrounds Luiz at the moment, that AVB has taken time to speak of him and back his man. It's a move that doesn't happen often with AVB, he prefers to speak of the collective unit. It speaks volumes that he has chosen to speak of Luiz.

He said:

"Everybody is entitled to have their opinion but my opinion of David is that he is an extremely good player. He is quick, anticipates well and has amazing technical qualities. You don't get central defenders with his technical ability and as player of his young age, he still has a lot of time to evolve. I am sure he will evolve into one of the best central defenders of the world.

The flying into tackles is based on his reading and anticipation in the game and that is a quality. If that anticipation comes with extra aggressiveness, that is for the referee to decide but for me as a manager you have to help all the players to evolve in some way or another.

Not all of them are perfect but we are here to help them evolve because they are the ones who take us to success, more than the other way around.

I have to say based on his ability with the ball at his feet and the way he reads the game, I agree with AVB that Luiz will become one of the best in the world.

Yes he is rash! In time, learning from JT, Ivanovic and Alex, Luiz will learn when to dive into tackles and when to stand up.

Some people say that would like to see him in midfield but I have to say I disagree based on one reason. That reason is because of his position on the pitch. At the moment playing as part of our back four, he can read the game and anticipate things as he sees the game going on in front of him. That's where is strength is.

If you moved him forward into midfield, he would find himself in a situation where the game is going on all around him and I think he would become less effective.

We really have to stick with Luiz and hope that he can stamp out the rash defending and become a much more composed defender. I have no doubt that in time he will, I just hope he's still in a Chelsea shirt when that happens!.
