As you can imagine, after four defeats (so far) this season already, leaking goals and rumours rife for a few weeks now, the increasing pressure on AVB to sort out our defensive frailties has resulted in speculation growing in the media that TWO PLAYERS could be making a move to Stamford Bridge in January.
The two players I am talking about are, Gary Cahill of Bolton and Alvaro Perreira the Uruguayan international from Porto.
Now things with Cahill are intriguing at the moment. He has started a couple of games next to JT for England has done well, it's almost a given that either way, if he doesn't leave Bolton for a fee in January, he will leave for nothing in July and possibly throw Josh McEachran as a loan deal until the end of the season into the mix and Chelsea could land his signature.
The problem you will have is that he is a stand out performer for Bolton. Playing for Chelsea is very different (no disrespect to them or their fans at all by the way) and he will need to learn quickly.
You would imagine that Cahill would want some sort of a guarantee of first team football if he came here and with Alex on his way in January (as rumours continue to build) he would find that possible in a shaken up back four.
Now the Alvaro Perreira story has plenty of twists and turns as you can imagine after the is he, isn't he going to sign for Chelsea back in the summer. He signed a new contract with them instead and you have to imagine that there is a high release clause inserted into it now. Whether Chelsea want to pay the release fee to get him is another thing. I guess Porto would be more than happy to negotiate now though!.
Perreira plays as either a left back or left winger and is someone AVB knows really well. For the first time this season after playing well for the most part, questions have been asked of Ashley Cole and I just wonder if AVB would want to bring in Perreira to take his place?.
Like I said, for the most part Cole has been an outstanding and consistent performer but made mistakes yesterday and was exposed for the winner as Glen Johnson turned him on the edge of the box.
We all agree and can see right in front of our eyes the defensive problems we have. AVB would be more than aware and maybe a huge defensive shake up is needed.
Come January, AVB and Chelsea could make a huge statement to our current crop of defenders and spend big once again. If that happens, what does it mean for some of our established names?
Only time will tell.
