Gael Kakuta has spoken out this week at his lack of first team opportunities so far at Bolton and it's no surprise really. Kakuta signed for Bolton on a season long loan in the summer hoping to follow in the footsteps of Danny Sturridge but so far has just been limited to a fantastic debut in the league cup against Aston Villa where he scored a cracker.
With Bolton on an awful run of form of late, Kakuta believes he deserves a chance to show everyone what he can do and is pushing for a start this weekend as Bolton take on Wigan. He said:
“I don’t really feel like I have had a chance to show people what I am capable of in the Premier League. I came here to play. No player likes to be sitting on the bench.(Source)
It was enjoyable to score on my debut but that’s in the past now and I obviously want to play as much as I can.
I feel comfortable in the team and that is always a bonus because it helps you play your best football.
I understand that you have to earn your place and I’m confident in my own ability and know that I will make the most of this opportunity.
The problem Kakuta has is that he has Martin Petrov being selected to play in front of him at the moment and when at a club like Bolton, struggling to pick up points, you are going to play your best eleven players available to try and turn things round and pick up points.
Saying that, Owen Coyle has done that and things still haven't gone their way so why not give Kakuta a run in some games and give him his chance in the Premier League.
We have to be honest, it's no easy decision to do that when you are under pressure and with the levels of expectation of managers in the Premier League it could be easy to shy away from picking Kakuta ahead of Petrov or Eagles.
The simple fact remains, Gael Kakuta is different class, as an abundance of talent and can produce something out of nothing. Come on Owen Coyle, take a chance and give him his shot!
(Here is a video of Kakuta this past summer and is the most recent compilation I could find showing exactly what he offers Owen Coyle and the Bolton fans.)
