When Andre Villas-Boas took the Chelsea job and gave on his first interviews he was asked about certain players here (Torres) and getting the best out of them. What he said was important at the time and three months later we are beginning to see him develop exactly what he has promised.
What he said when he took over was:
"We faced this question last year at Porto with a striker of the quality of Falcao. He was a striker who didn't find the back of the net in pre-season and was frustrated. We didn't tune the team to provide to him. We tuned the team as a whole. Once we did that, he scored 30 goals in a season, 60 in two seasons. It's about fine-tuning the team, not the player.I have to say look how far we have come. He is very keen to not speak of individual players but if he does he will always refer back to their role amongst the rest of the team and that's good. Of course the likes of Lampard and Sturridge will take all the credit for yesterday but once again he was keen to point out the team effort and taking the time to dedicate the win to the all the players and the technical staff.
We are a technical staff that focuses a lot on unlocking potential. Everybody has a little bit more to give and in day-to-day life, that is how everybody progresses in their careers. We feel that the players are the same and you have to stimulate them and motivate them to look for the things that they didn't try before. We are a technical staff that incentivises a lot of freedom of choice because in the end when the players are on the pitch, they face different situations that they have to solve without the help of their manager.
That this is the kind of stimulus that we want the players to have, responsibility and making decisions, because in the end the game is decided by them on the pitch. It is a clashing together of two good organisations and in the end it is the relationship between all of our players that can lead us to success, and that is what I want to work on.
You look around our first team squad now and you can see how they have developed in confidence, scoring goals and playing well. There are different outstanding performers in every game which is a credit to his management style. For example, Ramires had a great game against Swansea and weighed in with two good goals last week. Yesterday against Swansea he had a more understated game as Lampard stepped up with three goals.
Fernando Torres has scored two in two games before his ban in the League, was really unlucky not to score at least once in Valencia and with him banned, Sturridge came back in and scored two.
We really are seeing Chelsea develop into a confident and expressive side once again and it's still early stages in the League.
I asked you all last Saturday to rate AVB's time as Chelsea manager so far this season. For me it gets better and better.
