We have had to wait for two long weeks for today. We have seen to be fair Chelsea make a slowish start to their Premier League campaign despite picking up seven points out of nine but have had to sit and watch those two sides from Manchester turn up the heat.
City and United and playing fast attacking football, the football us Chelsea fans are crying out for and with important transfer window signings, Chelsea will be keen to put in a better performance with the right result today.
Sunderland is no easy game. Sunderland under Steve Bruce are capable of beating anyone on their day and looking at the signings Bruce has made, are surely looking at finishing well in the top half of the table this term.
In a hostile atmosphere this afternoon, Chelsea need to be up for the game and to start quickly to put Sunderland on the back foot.
So what are we to expect of Chelsea this afternoon. There has been important news this week with the signing of Raul Meireles on deadline day, Cech and Luiz back fit and Danny Sturridge available for selection after his suspension. Didier Drogba and Michael Essien miss the game through injury.
If this was last season, you could more or less pick the Chelsea team week in week out and maybe that was our downfall. AVB has come in, addressed the situation of squad depth and bringing the age down and the signings he has made in key areas, for me now gives us plenty of options so no one can really say now, they know who starts today.
For me, we have lacked pace going forward. We haven't seen the free flowing, fluid attacking football that AVB and all of us crave. Two players that have been brought in will give us exactly what we need. Juan Mata will take on the creative role at the club. Raul Meireles is a fantastic addition to the side and I expect him to play today.
If it was me today I would line up with Cech in goal. Cole, Terry, Luiz and Ivanovic at the back to remain tight and solid. I think we HAVE TO play Raul Meireles next to Frank Lampard so it would be a toss up from three players for the holding role. Purely for his experience I would stick Mikel there to start with. Maybe Romeu to come on there later in the game.
It's the front three that is key for Chelsea today. If we are looking to attack at pace, to get the best out of Fernando Torres, then we HAVE TO play Mata wide right, Torres through the middle and Danny Sturridge wide left. Mata and Sturridge to have the freedom to rotate and cut inside. No matter what, Torres MUST stay through the middle.
I asked the question the other day if the result or the performance is most important today and I wondering why we can't be greedy and ask for both today?. I would love to see Chelsea put in the kind of performance that puts down a marker on a par with United and City.
If we play as I would like us to, I can see us winning by three. It will be a battle and we have to match the effort and enthusiasm that will be shown today by Sunderland. If we do that, we can build on that and take the game to the next level.
Chelsea have that chance today. AVB has spoken of the fact that we will now improve game after game and it starts today. Come on Chelsea ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!
