Tonight, Chelsea start their Champions League campaign under Andre Villas Boas. AVB has spoken of the importance of fighting for every competition we enter this season and our quest for the greatest prize in club football remains. AVB has also spoken of changes from the side that beat Sunderland at the weekend, but it's important that we start well in the competition.
Starting this seasons campaign with a win is imperative and AVB will look for another improved performance building on last weekend. It's the team selection tonight that will interest all of us to see exactly how much faith he has in certain players tonight.
Ramires is suspended after being sent off against United at Old Trafford last term, Mikel and McEachran are struggling with injuries so I wonder if we will see a change in formation or if new signing Oriol Romeu will get the nod to play alongside Lampard and Meireles?.
Another question on our minds is will Fernando Torres be given the start tonight ahead of Nico Anelka?. Didier Drogba is out and Romelu Lukaku isn't named as part of the 25 for the competition so it's a toss up between the two. My money is on Torres.
Hoping Fernando Torres starts the game, we could see Mata, Meireles and Torres play for the first time together and it will be very interesting to see how they click together. I have mentioned numerous times on here about the service Torres isn't getting and I am sure that Meireles and Mata will look to provide him with exactly what he needs starting tonight.
Another question would be our back four. Will we see Alex and Luiz feature tonight and if so, who do they replace?. I would give Luiz a game ahead of United and stick him next to JT and shove Ivanovic at right back just to keep things tight at the back.
The good thing about this season and different from our Champions League campaign last season, is the options AVB has within the squad now.
I can maybe see as many as three changes from Sunderland but the important thing must be that the fluidity of the side remains. Chelsea like at Sunderland, need to start well and on the front foot. We need to see the faster, attacking football that we all keep hearing about.
The thing is, right now I will take any kind of win just to start with three points! Come on Chelsea!
