One rumour gained momentum yesterday regarding Florent Malouda and reported interest from German giants Bayern Munich. German Magazine Kicker is reporting that Bayern have shown "big" interest in the Frenchman and a bidding war could start as the January window opens.
I think it was surprising to see Malouda re affirm his commitment to Chelsea during the transfer window and especially on deadline day. Chelsea signed Juan Mata who openly admitted he has been told he will play a big part in AVB's plans so you would think Malouda would have a struggle on his hands to win his place back.
In addition to this, Malouda wants to extend his contract with Chelsea to 2014 but it's thought that the club would not entertain the idea. So at the moment, he is here but his contract is now due to expire soon.
So he is left in a situation he hasn't ever been faced with at the club ever since he has been here. He has always commanded a regular start down our left hand side. In our double winning season he was easily one of the first names on the team sheet because of his form and you wouldn't see Yuri Zhirkov ahead of him. The problem was that last season when his form dipped drastically, it was still the same, he still played.
So the arrival of Mata now provides Malouda with a challenge and one I believe he doesn't stand a chance of winning realistically. The other night with Ramires suspended and Lampard put on the bench he was given a role in the middle of the park and did OK. But, you do have to wonder if we had to pick our strongest side now, would he be in it?
I can't say honestly that he would be. It's all up to Malouda to raise his game, take the challenge head on and show AVB and all of us he can rekindle some of that form he showed two seasons ago.
If he does, it could mean a stay of execution with AVB until the end of the season. The thing is, if Bayern Munich come knocking and if he hasn't been playing regular by then, will it be a case of Malouda jumping before he is pushed?.
Only time will tell...
