Juan Mata was formerly introduced to the media yesterday at the training ground and guess what, one of his comments was immediately pulled by The Sun and made into a dig a Fernando Torres with a headline of "I'm not just here to help Torres" which isn't the way the comment was meant. It's part and parcel of this media witch hunt that surrounds Torres and Chelsea ahead of our games.
Anyway, getting back to the focus of this blog post, Mata spoke of why he signed for Chelsea and what he intends to achieve here. He said:
"Chelsea were the team that made the formal offer for me. For me, that was very important. I want to make the most of this opportunity and try to grow. They are one of the great sides in Europe. Fernando was an important factor. I spoke to him and he encouraged me to come.(Sources Here, Here and Here)
The English league is different and I feel this is an opportunity for me to grow and learn more as a footballer in a new style of game. It is more competitive, there is a lot more speed involved and I have learned a lot in the first two games I have played at home against Norwich and at Sunderland.
The Premier League is different, it has a different set of characteristics and qualities and is a very physical game; there is more contact. The way fouls are called here may be different from the Spanish league but all this is helping me learn and prepare myself as a footballer in the long-term.
My aim is to give as much as I can to the game. There are a lot of big, talented players here. As well as Torres, there are at least 20 more.
Little by little we are getting the results we want, we are gaining confidence and adapting to the manager's idea of the way we should be playing as a strong, fast and dynamic team. I think we showed this against Leverkusen and things are going very well. The team itself is made up of a lot of talented players. I am just one player wanting to give as much as I can when the coach puts me out there on the field.
We have all seen the contribution to the games he has played so far. He has played three games and scored two goals. It's his overall contribution that for me shows AVB and the Chelsea board exactly the reason we will never need Luka Modric!.
The good thing is, he will only get better and better and that really excites me. Juan Mata in three games so far has given us what we had been missing for the most part last season and that is creativity.
If we can give him as much of the ball during games that he wants, he could be the man that takes us to the next level starting on Sunday.
