I really cannot emphasise enough how proud of the team and our manager I am after yesterday's game. OK we lost the game, but like I said in my match report, we should have got a least a draw. He did exactly what he said about playing an attacking game, had the balls to take Lampard off at half time and continued to encourage the side to keep playing our game and to never give up!
The part I really want to focus on is the performance from our boys, not the result as for me, it was by far our best attacking performance of the season and one we have waited for five games to see. We have seen AVB work in pre-season with the side to get them to buy into his vision of how the game should be played. I think it is fair to say that it seemed to be taking a while but the signings of Meireles and Mata in particular have speeded up the process.
There really was a HUGE difference in our performance yesterday compared to the two Champions League games and the final Premier League game last season against United and it was so good to see.
How many teams will go to Old Trafford and create 21 attempts on goal??. OK, only 8 were on target, but how many sides will do that at OT?. Chelsea's movement off the ball and passing was better and we created them so many problems.
Another mention for AVB and credit again to him is that he is demonstrating that he stands by what he has said about players playing when they are on form. Replacing Frank Lampard at half time was an inspired substitution as within a minute Anelka had played a perfect pass to Torres and he scored. Lampard hasn't been anywhere near his best yet (although it will come trust me) and to have the balls to drag him off deserves a pat on the back for AVB.
Above all else, this performance for me showed that the players believe in what we are trying to do, believe in our manager and believe that they can be successful and can beat anyone on our day. He has said the other week that we are looking to build on each performance and get better.
That's the difference between this and last season and only after five games. Imagine what we can achieve if we continue to build on our performances week in, week out.
Trust in AVB this season but for now, credit where credit is due, he has been very impressive so far!.
