Following on from my earlier post featuring John Terry's interview in The Sun, there is another part of that interview I want to focus on and that's our progress in pre-season to where we find ourselves ahead of Stoke in two days time.
When asked about this pre season and how he feels we have prepared, JT responded by saying:
"He has confidence in himself and when he tells you something he firmly believes it and he gets that across in 100 per cent the right way. He makes you believe that what he's talking about is right. His whole demeanour and his attitude is second to none.I totally agree with JT. We have openly seen the progress we have been making from game to game. The players look sharp, they look fit and ready for the challenge that lies ahead.
I've been really impressed with him. In pre-season, everyone thinks about running but from day one, we were working on our shape, the way he wanted us to play, the way he wanted us to press. He said it would take time and it will take games, which it did in the first few games. He understood that.
But he wanted more from us after the second and third games. He feels we are in a position now that we are where he wants us to be."
The general consensus about pre season has I guess before Jose came here, been about a hard slog, running miles to get players fit for a couple of weeks and then to start working with the ball. Jose was the first to implement the change to work with the ball from day one and it's great to see AVB do the same.
I have said it before but we have looked on a totally different level to Aston Villa the other week and again against Rangers, bearing in mind they have already started their season and played three or four competitive games, we looked much fitter.
I keep going on about it on here, but I am really impressed with how hard we have been working in pre season without the ball, especially in the opposition half. There is an old saying in football that you "defend from the front" and for a while it has been banded about as we watch forwards make half hearted attempts to close defenders down.
Barcelona have changed the way we think about that phrase these days and for Chelsea this season, it could become an important weapon in our armoury. The fact that AVB has had the players working on this from day one really encourages me ahead of the new season.
Of course, I could be proven wrong as we head to the Britannia on Sunday but I am confident of three points and of seeing a fitter, motivated and hungry Chelsea pressing the opposition high up the pitch with the focus on winning the ball back and attacking their goal as quickly as possible!
Prepare for people to sit up and take notice this season!.
