I think it's safe to say that none of us would have expected AVB to appoint Roberto Di Matteo the Chelsea legend as his assistant manager this summer. After all we had all known that Di Matteo had made the step up to managing MK Dons first of all and then had done fantastically well to get West Brom promoted back into the Premier League at his first attempt. OK, they got stuffed here 6-0 in the first game of last season, but still no one expected Bobby to get the sack.
So as a result I guess it's a natural assumption to think that he would be waiting for the call to manage another club somewhere. It just happens that "the call" came from AVB inviting him to become his assistant at Stamford Bridge, his home from home and I guess the rest is now history.
Di Matteo has spoken to The Guardian featured this morning, about getting the call from Chelsea, AVB and his relationship with him but starts by revealing that in a way it has all worked out for him. He said:
"I didn't see it coming, not at all, but I've thought about it since, Three weeks ago I felt quite happy [that I'd left] because I would not have otherwise had the chance to come here, so life somehow always turns out how it has to go. I did very well [at West Brom] considering what our target was at the time. The footballing industry recognised that, and I guess that is one of the reasons I am sitting here today. I've experienced being a manager and I would love one day to do it again. But I wasn't expecting to be here today so God knows what's round the corner.(Source)
André is a clever boy, He speaks five languages and it's amazing how he switches. He knows what he is doing. He's very determined, he's very driven and I don't think he sees anybody as a threat. The biggest change for me, going from manager to assistant, has been the fact that the decision-making goes with him.
Every day I become a bit more of a support mechanism to the manager. But ours has been a very natural relationship. We understood each other straight away, and our football ideologies are the same. It feels like we have known each other for 30 years."
I am really pleased that he came back to Chelsea and has a chance to be successful once again here. It does seem like he has unfinished business with the club and although he couldn't have that time as a player, he has been given the chance to make his mark as AVB's assistant.
I am 100% sure that the Chelsea faithful will be singing his name week in, week out and will give him a fantastic reception in a couple of weeks at The Bridge.
Di Matteo will never be forgotten as a player here at Chelsea, for his style and grace on the football pitch with his socks over his knee caps, with the goals he scored and trophies he helped us to win. Let's also not forget his ball over the top to Dennis Wise in the San Siro for the goal we sing about still to this day.
I just really hope that he can finally piece together this part of the jigsaw and to remembered as a successful member of the backroom team who brought success to the club too!.
Fingers crossed!
