Bookies have slashed the odds on Andre Villas-Boas becoming the new Chelsea manager over the weekend and this morning from 8/1 - 11/10 and have reportedly suspended the betting!.
After weeks of speculation about who the main man was going to be at Chelsea, it seems there could be two arriving at Stamford Bridge with Guus Hiddink coming in as Director of Football and Andre Villas-Boas as the new First Team Coach.
We have all been waiting for weeks wondering when Hiddink would be appointed but after the speculation intensified surrounding Turkey's recent game against Belgium nothing happened apart from Hiddink stating that he was "going on holiday" and his agent reiterating his stance that he will honour his contract with Turkey.
We then heard rumours that Hiddink has "advised" Roman Abramovich to get out there and bring Wesley Sneijder to the club as Hiddink revealed he had been working as an "advisor" to Roman and Chelsea ever since he left the club in 2009. This again was denied by Hiddink.
So we are left with numerous reports and stories about Hiddink that go from one extreme to the other. Just this morning reports state that he should have his contract finalised and done and dusted by this Friday but again, this is just speculation and we will have to see what happens.
So all of a sudden Andre Villas-Boas has re-emerged as a real contender now today at Chelsea and I just wonder if Hiddink has suggested to Abramovich that the day to day running of Chelsea and the pressures of the job would be just too much for him to deal with at his age?. I could be wrong, but the fact that Villas-Boas is now strongly linked to the job indicates to me that Hiddink could be about to come here as just the Director of Football to oversea footballing matters throughout the club in a partnership with Villas-Boas.
It seems that Porto are resigned to losing their manager after stating that his release clause is £13m and we have to believe that Abramovich will quite happily pay that to get his man. The Portuguese club have said:
"Villas Boas has a contract and a clause of €15million. If someone deposits €15million into our account and he wants to go, we can not do anything because it is something that is contractually specified."
So if reports are to believed it will be an interesting couple of days at Stamford Bridge. Pre season training starts two weeks from today and it's believed Abramovich wants the managerial situation sorted out way before then.
What do you think of Hiddink and potentially Villas-Boas coming here to work together? Do you think the Director of Football situation can work at Chelsea or would you prefer to have just the Manager given the responsibility of taking over the football side of the club?
For me, I would prefer just one man doing it but I guess because of the pressures in the game now and especially at Chelsea after seeing what happened to Carlo, two men working together with the same ideas and direction could really make things better for Chelsea.
That's all we want as Chelsea fans. We would things to improve season after season, to get better and better and if there is one man to ensure this happens it's Roman Abramovich.
