The big question this summer apart from potential signings after having it confirmed that Didier Drogba will be staying at the club, will be how do we get the best out of Drogba and Torres?. Following on from yesterdays post, I wanted to look at Chelsea as a whole and the fact that maybe it's because we are set up, with the players we have, to play 4-3-3.
When Carlo came to the club he was dead set on playing a 4-diamond-2 formation with a diamond midfield. At times it worked but for the most part it didn't and he quickly reverted back to our tried and trusted 4-3-3 formation. He also tried to play 4-4-2 with Drogba and Torres, 4-3-2-1 and 4-4-1-1 formations but the same thing happened, we ended up switching back to 4-3-3.
Is the main problem we have now our philosophy at the club and the fact we are stuck in a 4-3-3? Could the 4-3-3 still work with the right manager at the helm?.
There are plenty of games we have seen over the last few years that has seen the 4-3-3 work perfectly and we have seen fast flowing attacking football, scoring bundles of goals. Look at Brendan Rogers at Swansea and the success he has had with it. He learnt the basis of the formation during his time here working for Jose Mourinho and knew how to implement the formation. It comes as no surprise that he has had more or less immediate success with it based on the fact he has brought into the club the players that he knows would make that formation work.
Chelsea HAVE the players to make it work and have done so time and time again but this season more than ever, our 4-3-3 formation came to a grinding halt in games and teams found it easy to play against us.
For those of you who follow my blog, I apologise now if I am repeating myself but I feel the point I have made before is a valid one in this post. Chelsea's demise in games this season has been because we haven't made the 4-3-3 formation work in big games. In order for the formation to work we need to play at a high tempo, move the ball forward quickly and attack teams and force them onto the back foot.
It's during games this season when our play has become to laboured and slow that we do not get the benefit of the formation. When we don't move the ball forward quickly and muck about with it playing silly balls from side to side at a slower tempo, the opposition have found it easy to get back in their defensive positions and cope with our formation much easier than ever.
Now maybe that's because of the players playing who haven't been at their best but we could be faced with the same problems next season.
I am just wondering if it's time to say goodbye to 4-3-3 or if we are stuck with it until the squad had a complete overhaul.
