When you look at what has happened to Manchester City in recent seasons being Chelsea fans, I can't help but think back to how it all happened for us and draw comparisons. The thing is as much as we look at City, the money they have been spending and the huge amount of players that have come into the club, we still think they are some way off from being realistic title contenders.
What City need to remember, is in a way Chelsea provided the blue print and I think that only now after their first trophy success since the takeover, the owners realise that they need to follow.
News of their Chairman's comments will have Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal all sitting up and taking notice and every single one of us will realise, we need to strengthen to stay ahead.
The City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said:
‘I feel we have an incredible foundation for incredible years ahead. We are one step further on a journey we started three years ago. I am delighted at the way the team has progressed. But our ambitions are much bigger than what has been achieved this season.
Now we are in the Champions League we need to perform and progress. It is a big challenge. We have won the FA Cup, that’s great. But I believe there are a lot more cups to win – and we want to win the league.
Sheikh Mansour always felt it was always going to be year four as the year we were going to go for it. I am really delighted for him we are now in a really strong position.
It is very important to maintain the heart and soul of the team, But we need to strengthen some areas for next season. We know exactly the players that fit well into the squad.
For me it's the comment about the heart and soul of the team that is the most important. You could argue that City haven't had that before this season and Arsenal are the same. Look at Chelsea and United. We have had an experience core of our side that has remained constant over the last six seasons. Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba have been our heartbeat. Players have come in and featured in and around them but these four are the names people always mention when talking of our "core".
United, and their core has been based on Van Der Saar, Ferdinand, Vidic, Scholes, Giggs and Neville. Look at just how many seasons they have featured at Old Trafford. Their experience of title run In's and European football is invaluable and is something that City are looking to aspire to.
If you look at City now and especially this season you can see a core being established there but at the moment still some way off Chelsea and United when it comes to experience.
City's cup win is massive for all of us because as Chelsea did by winning the League Cup, it gave the squad a winning mentality which is important. Chelsea were able to build on that and three Premier League titles later, we see finishing second place this season as a failure.
City will be stronger next season and each of us need to rebuild ourselves to stay ahead!
