In a couple of hours, Chelsea take on Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge and I really hope it's what happens on the pitch that takes much of the focus of attention. Somehow, I really can't see what happening though which is a shame.
I wrote an article the other day about the situation with our manager, the fact that everyone has been left in limbo and besides everything else, our manager is only human and deserves respect from all of us and the club. If they want him replaced in the summer, he should at least have been told by now so he can officially say goodbye to the Chelsea fans at the game today.
As we all know, this hasn't happened so at the end of the game every single one of us will be watching Carlo and wondering if this is really the last time we will see him at the Bridge as our manager. It's doing the game and being the potential last game for some of our players a dis-service it really is. I have even read this morning that the game is a "dead rubber" and you ask us Chelsea and Newcastle fans, it couldn't be further from the truth.
Alan Pardew brings his side to Chelsea knowing they are safe and have survived the season back in the Premier League. Pardew has done a great job in steadying the ship after Chris Hughton's departure. The amazing fact is after yesterdays results, if Newcastle win the game, they move into 7th place in the League depending on today's games! So don't tell me it means nothing to them.
For Chelsea it's simple, a win will more or less establish our second place finish in the League. That's all important for Chelsea and we cannot afford to let what we have worked so hard to achieve, slip today.
Newcastle come here with their injury problems and suspension worries. The much improved Kevin Nolan is out for the season after surgery, Tiote is one booking away from a three game ban so it's believed that he won't be risked today so they do look short in midfield. The thing is, no matter who takes to the field, they will give their everything for their supporters so Chelsea need to be more than a match for them today on the pitch and in the stands.
For Chelsea, we know Bosingwa is out for these two games and more than likely on his way in the summer. Fernando Torres is recalled to the starting line up so it will be interesting to see how Chelsea approach this one. It's my guess that Salomon Kalou will make way and Didier Drogba will line up next to Torres up front. I have a feeling that apart from that, it will be the only change made to the same eleven that started last week. Substitutions will say a lot today. Expect Nico Anelka and Paulo Ferreira to come on during the game to maybe say their farewell to the fans with one other change to be made.
No disrespect to Newcastle and their fans but it should be a game we can win and win easily today if we play to our best. A couple of early goals would be nice to calm us all down and then hopefully see the players turn on the style.
So I am going for Chelsea to win by three or four and wrap up second place in the league. It would be good to finish on a high at home and then we can share our appreciation of each other afterwards with the parade around the pitch.
It's at this point where much of our focus will be on the likes of Ancelotti and Didier Drogba. It's how these two respond to the fans that will make most of the headlines tomorrow. You will be able to see on their faces the first signs of any truth in the rumours they could be leaving in the summer. This is what alot of us will be looking for which like I say, is a shame because the game itself and our performance should be making them.
For now, we need to get behind the team and our manager and finish on a high. I have said it before, second place was unthinkable at one stage of the season so to all those people who say it's been a failure need to be reminded once again, it could have been worse.
So come on Chelsea play well, give everything for yourselves, the supporters and most importantly of all our manager.
Chelsea to win by three and Torres to score a couple!
