Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed in his press conference on Friday that Fernando Torres will return to the starting eleven tomorrow against Newcastle and was then asked about the fact that he signed for Chelsea in the January transfer window and not last summer and if this was an ideal situation. Carlo responded by saying:
"Obviously, if we'd been able to buy Torres and David Luiz in the summer, it would have been easier for them. It's not always easy to play well immediately if you arrive in January. But we were not able to do this because Liverpool and Benfica wanted to start the season with these players.(Source)
Obviously, to play Fernando and Drogba, you need to change the position of the midfielders a bit, and we've not had time to change our philosophy. That is something you can cope with ahead of a new season. But sometimes it's not so easy to buy a player at the right time. You have to wait. When you have a possibility to buy Torres, you are not thinking about it being a problem for the other players. If you have a chance to buy him, you have to buy him. He's had problems this year, but he will start pre-season training with more knowledge about the squad, so it will be easier for him. He will have a fantastic career with Chelsea.
I think he has a point and it's important to remember that he has only been with us just over three months now. I still think at times we are not playing Torres to his strengths when he starts games or comes on as a substitute and he looks lost and struggles to get involved in our play.
What was interesting for me is the goal he scored against West Ham. He came on for Drogba and played through the middle in a 4-3-3 formation. Anelka fed him the kind of ball he loves and with a little bit of luck he took his chance. This is what we need to be doing for Fernando Torres to really get the best out of him.
I don't want to be seeing him coming out wide to the byline to get the ball or dropping deep. He needs to be playing on the shoulder of the last defender and hopefully will have that chance on Sunday.
I think we can all agree, Torres like a lot of players who played in the World Cup last summer, needs rest and then a good full pre season and I have no doubt in my mind, we will see a happier, fitter Fernando Torres back to his best and hitting the ground running next season!
