This afternoon Chelsea take on a resurgent West Brom side, rejuvenated by new boss Roy Hodgson who in my opinion wasn't given the time to get things right at Liverpool. Since taking over from ex-Chelsea Bobby Di Matteo he has worked with his players and is getting some impressive results in recent weeks. Chelsea again will need to be at their best to get a result today.
West Brom are unbeaten since a 3-0 away defeat at City. They have drawn 4 games and have beaten the likes of Sunderland away, Liverpool at home and Birmingham away and find themselves on 39 points, 10th in the Premier League. This is no easy game this afternoon.
Chelsea will be looking to put the disappointment of Tuesday night behind us. John Terry and David Luiz are certain to return to the starting line up but we have Ramires and Alex out with muscle injuries.
The question remains who will Carlo decide to go with today. Chelsea need to win the game as we are in third position, four points behind Arsenal (who play Liverpool tomorrow) and a point above City who are playing United today in the FA Cup. Chelsea have to capitalise and make every single game count so I predict Carlo will play his strongest side today. We just have to find out exactly who that would be.
Of course we still are waiting on Fernando Torres' first goal for the club. After being taken off at half time against United (which I disagree with still by the way!) I would suggest he starts today. It's whether Carlo will decide to give Drogba the start next to him and rest Anelka who played the majority of the game Tuesday night. For me, I would go with Drogba and Torres.
The back four should be Luiz, Terry and Cole in front of Petr Cech but I wonder if he will start Ivanovic or Bosingwa. It could be Bosingwa today as he never played Tuesday with Branna on the bench.
Our midfield needs a spark. Lampard will play again and I believe Essien will also start. It's whether Yuri Zhirkov gets the nod to play in place of Malouda on the left and if Carlo decides to go with Yossi Benayoun in place of Ramires or Salomon Kalou. For me, I would go with Zhirkov and Benayoun today.
So my team prediction for today (remembering I am not Carlo and I could be wrong) is:
Cech, Bosingwa, Luiz, Terry (C), Cole, Benayoun, Essien, Lampard, Zhirkov, Drogba and Torres.
Chelsea have made a real big thing this week after United about speaking of focus now turning onto winning every game and cementing our position in the top three to automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages next season. We have a chance to get some confidence back with a good performance this afternoon.
The problem we have, is that we have become too inconsistent lately and when we threaten to put teams to bed we either overplay or make a right meal of things. It's back to basics time for Chelsea for me. We need to move the ball forward quickly and with the likes of Lampard and Benayoun in the middle of the pitch we have good options for that killer ball / final pass we have been lacking for the majority of this season.
Again though, I have to stress, West Brom are a good side and work hard. Chelsea need to match their work rate if we are to then kick on and get the right result.
I am calling for a good performance and result again once more (How many times have I said that and it hasn't happened!) this afternoon from Chelsea. Show us the pride you have in playing for us, pride you have wearing the shirt and a togetherness that can see us through to the end of the season.
Come on Chelsea and for god sake, SOMEONE PLAY TORRES IN!

Torres has had plenty of chances to score, if even kalou had been getting that sort of encouragement to score we would not be in this situation.
ReplyDeleteVERY very dissappointed. Hopefully he will start to find the net soon but I'm sick of hearing about players not passing to him. He's been scuffing his shots, taking too long and generally wasting his chances.
The other players have a right to be annoyed.
