On Saturday morning, Tony Cascarino featured on talkSport in an interview gave his point of view about Didier Drogba. By 5pm that very same day, Cascarino must have felt like a right mug as Didier Drogba inspired Chelsea to a good away win and made a point to Carlo Ancelotti and everyone else that he isn't quite over the hill just yet!.
For me, I can't understand how anyone seems to value Cascarino's opinion's as a pundit anyway!. What did he achieve really?. The problem we have, is that there are so many media outlets now that it seems more and more ex-players are asked to take part. I am all for experienced players who have achieved things in the game, or players who have become part of football, players who everyone remembers giving their take on things because you respect them and what they have achieved.
The interview I am referring to is this one about Drogba. When asked about Didi and the arrival of Fernando Torres, Cascarino said:
The only valid point he makes in my eyes is the free kicks & corners comment. I agree 100% but for everything else, I simply cannot. It hasn't only been Didier Drogba, it's been everyone that has underperformed so to single him out is ridiculous. Granted, there have been some performances from Drogba that leave alot to be desired, but again same with the others.
I wonder how Cascarino felt after seeing Drogba's performance on Saturday. I wonder if he still wants him out now? The best thing Cascarino can do is retire peacefully, I cannot understand how anyone values his opinion.
What do you think about what he said?. Do you agree we have to sell Drogba!?

“Didier Drogba is a massive influence at that football club. He’s been a fantastic player for them. But certainly since the start of this season Drogba has been indifferent and that was one of the reasons why they went and spent £50m [on Fernando Torres]. Drogba obviously didn’t like it and I think he’s such a powerful figure within that football club that now you’ve brought Torres you’ve got to get Drogba out.
Drogba has not been the gladiator centre forward that we all know and love, he’s totally been switched off this year. When I see him taking free-kicks out wide and he’s tipping them into the middle when he’s 6’3 and he’s not trying to get on the end of them. He’s typical of a player who is just not doing what he should be doing.
We can talk about Torres all day but there are massive decisions to be made at that football club.”

For me it's a no brainer. The guy is 33 and we have invested £50m in his replacement, which Torres is, whether you choose to believe or not.
ReplyDeleteThe pair cannot work together and Drogba will be sol because it's the right time to do it. The elite clubs sustain long term success because they have mastered the art of when to keep players and when to sell, so we can't afford to be sentimental and auccessful at the same time as the club is the most important thing.
£120k-a-week says Drogba's too expensive a luxury to keep around. All this 'he can be Chelsea's' Giggs talk is nonsense. Giggs is humble and loves United, Drogba isn't humble and although he loves Chelsea, it doesn't mean as much to him as that ONE season at Marseille.
