Carlo Ancelotti is making headlines this morning after his pre match press conference ahead of Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge tonight because of one thing in particular and that's his comment made of the squad he was left with this season.
Of course as you can imagine with the focus of the questions about his future Carlo has explained that we haven't had the best of seasons because we never had players of enough quality to cover when we had our mid-season crisis.
Carlo said:
"I don't think the squad was good enough this year. At the start of the season, we couldn't have envisaged having very important players out at the same time. We struggled to manage when we were without Lampard, Drogba, Essien, Terry and Alex. At one point this season we had to put right-back Paulo Ferreira in the middle of defence because we had lost all our other centre-backs.(Source:The Sun)
You cannot think at the beginning of the season that you would have all these players out. In the bad moments, it was difficult for us to move on without these players and I think it cost us quite a few points. It wasn't just their technical quality which we missed but also their personality and their character.
I agreed with the club's philosophy to replace very important players with youngsters. Last summer was a good time to do that. Before our difficult moment we gradually used those young players like Kakuta, Sturridge and McEachran.
But in the difficult moment it was harder to put the responsibility on them and that is why we bought Fernando Torres and David Luiz in January.
Let's be honest, he is only stating what we already know. At the time the official squad's were submitted to the Premier League I raised questions after the departure of high profile names such as Carvalho, Joe Cole, Ballack and Deco.
Never before have we had the amount of injuries and problems in a season let alone all be at the same time in the season. I have said it before and I will say it again, When you lose Alex, Terry, Lampard, Essien and Drogba you are without the core of our side that has been part and parcel of the success we have had. Of course we are going to miss them.
There will be supporters who are supportive of the clubs decision to bring the youngsters through but you have to look at where they are now. It's only Josh McEachran that still features in and around the first team as Danny Sturridge is at Bolton, Van Aanholt and Bruma are at Leicester. Kakuta is at Fulham and Fabio Borini is at Swansea.
The decision taken by Roman in January to invest and the way he did had to be made as we simply could not afford to not qualify for the Champions League.
The thing is, and I know what Carlo is saying here, but I believe we were good enough when we had everyone fit and playing or at least the majority but it's the big games that have counted where we simply never turned up that will cost us.
Looking at United tonight they only picked up a draw meaning they are now 9 points ahead of us. If we beat Birmingham we go 6 points behind with United to play and they still have to face Arsenal.
What I am saying here, is that if we do beat United and end up finishing just 3 points behind them at the end of the season then to me we were good enough but the likes of Liverpool home and away, Arsenal away and Man City away are the games that have cost us because our players failed to play the way we all know they should have done and not because we weren't good enough.
Chelsea, United and Arsenal have all been shit at different stages of the season and I believe that whoever wins the league now will do so with the lowest points total for years. It just goes to show how bad the others have been that we are still in it and fighting at this stage now.
What do you think of Carlo's opinion of the squad and my opinion stating that we were good enough but dropped important points that will eventually cost us?
Would love to hear from you all. Post your thoughts below.
