After my post yesterday that caused a bit of a stir amongst Chelsea fans where I stated that "Torres will never fit in at Chelsea unless we play to his strengths", it seems that Chelsea legend Pat Nevin feels exactly the same (which is nice!).
Pat is quoted as saying:
First of all if you haven't seen my post yesterday then check it out and watch the video examples on there I posted and you should see my point. Of course everyone has an opinion so if you want to add anything to it then feel free to do so.
The key point here is the fact that Pat believes it's time for a change. For me I am not so sure. I am not saying that Chelsea need to change the way we play, my view on Torres is that we play to his strength which is through the middle to him off the shoulder of the last defender and not as part of a two up front that forces him at times, wide on the byline to get involved in our play.
I disagree with Nevin when he says that Chelsea do not have the same type of player as Alonso or Gerrard. Frank Lampard and Yossi Benayoun (when fit) can do the job easily. We have world class players at our club that can pass the ball so I don't think that's the issue. For example, if Carlo decided to stick Anelka or Malouda in behind Torres, they both have the ability to open up defences to feed Torres.
The good thing here is the fact we have options now, whereas in November and December we didn't. I just wrote another article asking the question if you believe we are back in the title race and if we can get Torres scoring goals and playing him where we can get the best out of him, I see no reason why we cannot push United all the way.

Pat is quoted as saying:
“Chelsea have to change, They have been a battering ram as a team for some time now. They knock the ball up to Didier Drogba and see what happens. You can’t do that with Torres. Chelsea need someone with a bit of vision to set him free; someone who can deliver the ball to him in the way he needs.
At Liverpool he had that with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso. Chelsea do not have that kind of player. Frank Lampard is capable of it, but it is not really his type of game.It could be that they have to buy someone in the summer to solve the problem.”
