I wrote an article the other day stating that Liverpool fans have to face facts about Fernando Torres' decision to leave the club. Yesterday in his press conference, Torres spoke of many things about his decision to leave but revealed he had the blessing of Steven Gerrard, he would never say anything against the Liverpool players and staff and if he scored tomorrow he wouldn't celebrate. He said:
“Stevie was one of the first ones who called me and supported me, hoping for the best for me. Whether I left or stayed, he helped me and supported me, maybe because he’d been in the same situation first. He’s been a very good friend and team-mate from the first to the last day. He only wanted the best for me and said he’d agree with me whatever decision I made.I think it would have been easy for Torres to make comments about Liverpool bearing in mind the scenes outside the training ground on Monday night. It's very interesting to hear that of all people, Gerrard wanted the best for his mate Torres and has agreed with his decision.
I don’t think it’s fair to call me a traitor. It makes no sense to say that, It’s an opinion people can have but I will never talk bad about any ex-Liverpool players or staff. They can say what they want.
I played three very good seasons there, left massive money there, lots of goals, good performances. I helped the sale process as well. I’m very happy with everything I did there.
Of course I understand it’s a difficult situation now, especially in the transfer window, but I have to think about my career as a footballer. It’s a step forward, everyone agrees.
Last summer, with the change of manager and directors, I was very excited about the new season, especially after my personal experience at the World Cup, when I won the tournament but wasn’t happy with my performance.
I wanted big expectations, but after the start I could see the real expectations weren’t so high. It’s best to be honest about what you can achieve every season.
People were talking about winning the Premier League or finishing in the top four, but maybe the club has to go slowly, step by step.
We were in the relegation zone with a month gone. I wanted to try to help the team forward, to get out of there, and back in the top four.
They’re close now, sixth or seventh, and moving the right way. But when you have a chance of playing for a team who have a chance to win the Champions League, and are the right age to do that and compete with the best, you have to do that.”
Maybe, and I mean no disrespect to Liverpool or their supporters, Gerrard looks back at his decision not to join Roman's revolution at Chelsea with regret. So if it is in fact the case then fair play to Mr Gerrard.
Once the game is done and dusted tomorrow we can all move on. Liverpool can get on with their season and Chelsea with ours. I think the point has been made by Torres and reiterated in his interview here. Liverpool are playing for their pride and to finish as high up the league as possible and after tomorrow good luck to them.
As for Chelsea, we are still in with a shout for three major trophies this season and that's why Torres has come to the club.
