Roman Abramovich has stunned the football world once again as he did over 8 years ago tonight and has made his and Chelsea's intentions clear. There were those of us that called into question his commitment to the Chelsea cause at some stages of this season and I am happy to admit that I was one of them. As the clock struck midnight to usher in 2011 there is not one person on this planet that expected Abramovich to put his hands in his pocket to the extent he has done and I am just wondering if last night has signalled the beginning of a new dawn at Chelsea?.
In those eight years at Stamford Bridge under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea have won three Premier League titles (runners up three times) three FA Cups, two League cups and two Community Shields (three times runners up) something which isn't to be sniffed at. We always wondered as the seasons past if we would ever see Roman spend again to the levels he did when he first came to the club and I guess based on recent times we never thought it would happen.
Well, like many of you I will wake up this morning and pinch myself looking at our Chelsea knowing we have signed one of the worlds greatest forwards in Fernando Torres and a star in the making in David Luiz. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of what's happened and the more we all sit here reading this and think about it, the more mind blowing it will become.
If no one was signed by the close of the window last night then deep down I may have been slightly gutted but with Alex due back from injury I thought we would be more than capable to get our title challenge back on track and our quest for Champions League and FA Cup glory this season as long as everyone was kept fit.
With Torres and Luiz coming into the squad it's a real statement of intent from Abramovich for this season and for the future. In addition to Ramires being signed back in the summer for £18m it means Roman has signed approx £90m on young talent to replace the likes of Ballack, Deco, Carvalho and Joe Cole that left the club back in the summer.
Torres at 26, Luiz at 23 and Ramires at 23 is a sign for me that Roman has decided enough was enough and we need to reinvigorate the squad with young but established names once again. Torres is an established player and proven goal scorer in the Premier League, Ramires is finding his feet and I have no doubt Luiz will prove that he can cut it with the best of them in England.
Some people in the press will comment and state "panic buys" because of what happened to our season in November and December. I don't believe that at all.
I cannot underestimate what's happened enough. This is a sign of intent from Chelsea and from Roman Abramovich. This IS a new dawn at Chelsea!
