Carlo has spoken about our recent poor form and especially our away form heading into the game at Bolton tonight. Without a win away in the Premier League since October, Carlo was asked about our philosophy and whether or not a change of style would be on the cards. He said:
“For Chelsea to win games, we have to play good football. We are not able to win games if we do not play well, We played very well last season and when we didn’t play well, we lost games, just as we have this season. Our aim is to improve our football. This is the way to win games. It is our philosophy.Once again from our manager you have to hand it to him for his honesty and belief in what he is trying to do at the club. After all, it was a change in his philosophy from the bloody diamond midfield that led us to the double. Credit to him for that.
We don’t want to stay back and maybe use the long ball or use the counter-attack. We want to play a different football so maybe this is also the reason that if we don’t play well we are vulnerable.
We want to follow this way because we think this is the right way for the club, for myself, for the players. We have great skill and ability to play this kind of football.
I thought a lot of times that it would be good to change something in the squad, the shape maybe, but we have been working with this shape for a year and a half. It’s good to change if there is a reason. If the players are not comfortable playing this kind of football, then we could change but after asking the players if the style was good, I decided not to change.”
It must have been hard for Carlo so see our form take a tumble and more than not you would have imagined Carlo would make changes to the system when he knew we had key players injured but I guess he is right when he says about working on this approach for a year and a half, it's not so simple and you cannot expect players to be able to adapt quickly between games.
The only thing that concerns me is the point I didn't really want Carlo to make as he more or less confirms what the other sides we come up against think about us these days, he stated we are vulnerable!.
Of course we all know at times we have been, but I believe we are working on this, and will put this right. With a clean sheet against Blackburn, we can kick on tonight with another one at Bolton.
However, if you know you are vulnerable then wouldn't you work on the way you play to ensure you remain tight and compact defensively when you do not have the ball?. I know they have been and will continue to do so.
So I am asking you the fans the question:
Do you think we should have changed our philosophy and if so when?KTBFFH.
