With news the other day that representatives from Benfica had travelled to London over the course of the weekend to negotiate a deal for David Luiz with Chelsea, it now seems as deal has been agreed and the player is due in London for a medical with the club within the next couple of days.
I posted up a video of the player and I think anyone who saw it was impressed with the players ability. The fee is believed to be around £21.5m and will be Chelsea's biggest outlay on a transfer fee for five years, a fact that will surprise a few people. People have had their opinion's on the player and also the fee but I have to say it's a good investment. Luiz looks quick, is two footed and can play anywhere across the back four.
The only think that concerns me is the implications of the deal for any of our existing players. At first we had a report that Chelsea would offer Paulo Ferreira as part of the deal. Then the over the weekend, some reports stated Salomon Kalou could be part of the deal. Now it's seems that one or possibly two of our youngsters could be sent to Benfica on loan. Patrick Van Aanholt and Jeffrey Bruma are being mentioned.
In my opinion, I could understand and would back a move that sees Ferreira move there as part of the deal as let's be honest, he has been a fantastic servant and has "done his time" at the club so you wouldn't stop him returning to his homeland.
For Van Aanholt and Bruma, I could also understand the move on loan as I said the other day, because of our run of results and the position we are faced with in the Premier League, Carlo has to play his best side week in, week out so the youngster will not be featuring much between now and the end of the season.
It's the fact that Kalou was linked as part of the deal that does concern me. I know I am not exactly his biggest fan, but at least he does try and add another dimension to our side when he comes on in games. If he goes and we do not replace him, we are short down the right hand side and remember, Anelka isn't exactly a right winger anyway!.
Let's hope if there is a player exchange whether it's on loan or a permanent move then it's the ones I have suggested and not Kalou.
More news on Luiz as the week progresses!.
