It comes as no surprise to any of us right now that Chelsea have had a team meeting yesterday after their training session ahead of the trip to Marseille this week. For the first time that I can remember Carlo Ancelotti openly criticised his players after Everton.
Carlo's comments after the game have made headlines and the rumours and speculation continues about his future. Carlo's comments after the game to me were spot on and I cannot agree more with what he said. He said:
"The first half was good, very good football, good pressure, good spirit but the second half was different, We lost our idea to play football, played long balls and were a bit scared. I didn't like this. We can lose the game but we don't have to lose our play. I saw the players in focus and concentrated with good tactical discipline but the second half was totally different. We were afraid and not able to play our football, Didier [Drogba] was alone in front and we needed to play better from the back. Everyone knows our football, and second half it was wrong. That's the thing about Carlo, he doesn't hide at all. He tells it how it is and it about time some of those players in that dressing room take a long hard look at themselves and their performances and understand what they need to do individually to put things right.
I don't think it is a problem of concentration or other things. Everyone knew it was a very important game for us and we are still in a difficult moment. We have to do better day by day on the training ground, and stay in focus and work harder than we are. This is the way I know to move on from the difficult moment.
We knew we could be top of the table, to renew our confidence, but we were not able to do it. We don't have to be scared of the criticism, the criticism is normal. I explained to my players what I feel in this moment and the players understood this. Tomorrow we have a training session and have time to speak about this for the next game.
We have to stay focused and have a great opportunity in the next game against Tottenham. One of the best teams in this moment, away, is a great opportunity to show character. Now there is no reason to smile. We have to stay in focus, we have to be serious and if you want to change quickly, I think we have to work hard."
I said in my match report that I found the Anelka substitution hard to understand at the time with leaving Kalou on the pitch and I do stand by that. Don't get me wrong, there are little instances of things at times with Carlo that I can't understand or make any sense out of, but we have to maintain our belief in our manager and believe that Carlo and the players will turn everything around.
People have openly criticised Carlo in the press and into overdrive on Twitter on Saturday night. The press are going to town on Chelsea at the moment but I want you all to remember one thing. If Chelsea can get their act together and win our next three massive games against Spurs, United and Arsenal then everything is back in our hands and we should be back in control.
That's the thing with football and with our season. It's a marathon not a sprint and we have time to turn this round. What better way to turn it round and make a statement to everyone laughing at what's happened to our season in the last month, than to win all three!.
Let's just hope and believe that Carlo will work his magic once again.
Keep the faith, Carefree & KTBFFH.
