On Saturday Michael Essien makes his return to the Chelsea side to face Everton after seeing out his three match suspension picked up for the straight red card he received against Fulham and you have to say we have missed him big time. You can only imagine that Essien has been sitting in the stands watching the games kicking himself for making that silly tackle on Dempsey. If only he didn't!. Saturday is his chance to return and bolster our midfield and has come at such an important time for Chelsea.
We all know what Essien brings to the side and to our midfield and that's strength, power and athleticism but more so this season, he brings a willingness to break from midfield and get forward. It's a feature of his play that has developed ever since he joined the club and without Lampard again this weekend, Essien will be key.
Many people were led to believe that Essien was brought into the midfield to be lined up as Makelele's replacement but Essien has proven that he offers the side so much more being a box-to-box type midfielder. This is what Chelsea has missed in the last few weeks.
Let's not forget that Essien is a combative midfielder and his strength in the tackle can and his work rate is a welcome addition to our defence shape. Ramires and Mikel have worked hard in the middle in his absence but the brute power of Essien compared to Ramires makes the world of difference.
In a game like Everton, it will be a hard midfield battle and Essien will be key to Chelsea getting the right result. We will need him to be up and down that pitch, winning tackles, breaking up their play and then looking to get forward.
Chelsea fans everywhere have been waiting for the past three Premier League games watching our performances realising that we miss Essien more than ever.
Let's hope that come Saturday, Essien can give us what we have been missing and put Chelsea back on track in the League.
