It seems that since Carlo Ancelotti had the news that Alex required surgery and would be out for two months, he hasn't been able to decide who should play at right back. In the games since Chelsea have had their problems at Centre back and Ivanovic has been pulled inside to play next to Alex or JT, Paulo Ferreira and Jose Bosingwa have been rotated from game to game as Carlo looks to find the perfect balance. With Bosingwa injured against Marseille and Ferreira playing fantastic yesterday, surely Carlo has to go with Ferreira until Alex returns from injury.
Alot was made of how Ferreira would deal with Gareth Bale yesterday before the game with even our own fans stating that they were worried about our right side before the game. Paulo played great and kept Bale quiet yesterday and was one of our best performers. His individual performance has been overlooked by many this morning but for me it's about time someone sang his praises as he always gives his all in a blue shirt ever since he came to club.
There are Chelsea supporters out there that do not rate Ferreira and that is fine as everyone is entitled to their opinions. My opinion is alot different.
You see, what you need to remember is that Chelsea's surge to the double last season was built on solid foundations. Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry and Cole were our back five that provided Carlo with the base to work from. Ivanovic (because Bosingwa was injured) was selected ahead of Ferreira and rightly so and provided Chelsea with balance down the right hand side with Cole pushing forward down the left. Ivanovic is a defender first and foremost and this was key to the way we played.
When Bosingwa plays there we do not look anywhere near as solid and I believe maybe just maybe we suffer for it. At the moment with Alex's injury and Ivanovic at centre back Carlo needs to bolster our defensive shape and qualities back there and Ferreria for me gets the nod.
I for one have stated on here before and will say it again, I am still at a loss as to why Jose Mourinho dropped Ferreira in the first place. Ferreira was part and parcel of the side that won back to back titles and cup's back in 2004 and 2005 and the following season was dropped by Jose as Chelsea looked to the likes of Geremi, Boulahrouz and Lassana Diarra.
Ever since then Ferreira has had to play second fiddle in the squad and has been used now and again. He has had to play second fiddle to Juliano Belletti, Essien and then Ivanovic which has been hard for Paulo.
Yesterday Ferreira showed that he is still different class in his position and still has an important part to play in the next few months as Chelsea look to get their season back on track.
He still gives it his all, still gets up and down that wing and you know if you put him in the side he will do a job for you so to me it's now simple. Ferreira should start until Alex returns. He is much more solid defensively than Bosingwa.
What do you people think? Am I right about Ferreira?
