Chelsea youngster Ryan Bertrand has given an interview to a local newspaper in Nottingham and has stated he made the right choice joining Nottingham Forest on loan but at the same time is wondering whether staying at Chelsea would have seen him called up to the England team.
He said:
"I often think about whether I might have got a chance at Chelsea, if I was there, There is probably more of a chance of that now than there would have been a year or two ago. Back then, you would not have got a look in. But now, you do sit back and think about it sometimes.(Source: This is Nottingham)
And with the England situation there are certain players getting in the England team who are not even playing for their clubs. People say it is important to go out and get games with other clubs on loan. But what about the players who are happy to sit on the bench – but still get in the England team? There is a contradiction there.
We all know Gibbs is a fantastic player, I have played with him a lot of times. But he is not playing regularly and he has been called up for England.
I would not change my experiences so far because I have learned so much from them, And I feel I will be a better player a few years down the line. It has been a big benefit, without question.
And if, in a year or two, I do have the chance to say 'right, I am going to stay at Chelsea now and battle for my place' I will be in a better position to do that – because I have learned so much. To go back there one day would be the ultimate dream. When you join a team like Chelsea, that is always going to be your dream, to end up playing. But there are some good players ahead of me at the minute.
At this moment, I am happy where I am and focused on doing a good job for Forest."
You have to say he makes a really good point. With what has happened at Chelsea with Carlo focusing more on bringing the young players through and also Fabio Capello as Ryan said, calling up Gibbs from Arsenal to the full squad, you have to wonder if he would have been involved at Chelsea and England.
Patrick Van Aanholt looks like the natural replacement for Ashley Cole and has impressed in the appearances he has made so far. Bertrand would be behind Van Aanholt in my opinion. Whether or not he would be called up to the full England squad is another matter.
For now, Ryan just needs to keep doing what he is doing in the Championship and force his way into Carlo's thoughts. With the focus on our youth he may just have a chance.
