The press in the UK have picked up on an interview that was given by Bayern Munich General Manager Uli Hoeness as he stated that Chelsea had made an offer of 65m Euros plus Jose Bosingwa for Franck Ribery. He said:
"We never received an offer over €100 million. The best bid game from Chelsea: €65 million plus the player Bosingwa, We also received other offers of €76 and €80 million. He never came to us and said he wanted to leave at any price. He always said to us that he would like to move to Real Madrid, but that if we wanted to keep him, then it was not a problem. [Selling him] was never a real consideration. However, we want to create the conditions which give Franck the feeling that he can achieve something here in Munich. If he cannot see this potential, then he will leave. If FC Bayern says no, then Franck stays."
So you have to wonder why on earth would we pay 65m Euros for a player who has always stated that he wants to join Real Madrid? I can see why we are interested as he does have talent and is young but do we need Ribery at the moment? I don't think so at all. We have enough strength in depth which was proven at the weekend against Wolves and with Lamps, Ballack and Deco to come back into the side I can't see where Ribery would fit in. Ok, there is the African Nations in January and we will lose Essien and Mikel but looking at the games we have during the time they are away there is no need for us to plough money into a player who First of all has no Premier League experience (look at how long it has taken Malouda to settle) and Second, who has gone on record saying that he wants to play somewhere else!
Let's put that chequebook away when it comes to Ribery and concentrate on other players. So bearing in mind the fact that we had 65m to burn on Ribery, who would you spend the money on now bearing in mind the depth of our squad, and whether or not they would walk into the side? Let me know your thoughts!

Agreed that Ribery is not worth the bother - personally and as crazy as it sounds I'd rather have Bosingwa (it's taken us years to finally find a right back up to the job and then we're going to give him away?). I'd like to see the money spent on young players who would be content at dipping in and out of the team for the rest of the season before stepping up in the future (ala Sturridge). I think the one area we must address is the goalkeeping situation. Obviously as long as big Pete is ship-shape then there's nothing to worry about, but (as well as he played against Liverpool) I'm not convinced Hilario could hold it together for any length of time and I certainly wouldn't trust Turnball with our proud defensive record. At the moment everything is fine and the squad is looking as strong as it's ever looked (literally... ever). It's 2011 that we need to have our eyes on, which points very much to investment in youth. Having said that, after the goals he scored against us recently, who are we to turn our noses up at Aguero?
ReplyDeleteChris, Great post.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the Goalkeeping position. If Cech gets injured and is out for weeks we will be in trouble.
I know what you are saying about Aguero but if it aint broke don't fix it comes to mind..
